🏆 Popular Used Baritones & Euphoniums
📯 Baritone vs Euphonium — What's the Difference?
📐 Baritone
Smaller bore! Typically .500"–.520". Brighter, «edgier» sound. Lighter than euphonium. Usually 3 valves. In brass band = middle voice between horn and euphonium. In wind orchestra = harmonic support. Less well-known than euphonium but important!
📐 Euphonium ⭐⭐
Larger bore! .570"–.620". Warm, wide, «velvety» sound = the «brass cello»! Heavier. 3 or 4 valves. 4th valve = compensating system = accurate intonation in low register! In brass band = the soloist! Beautiful melodies, solo parts. The more popular of the two.
📐 Often confused!
Many people call a euphonium a «baritone» and vice versa! Even manufacturers sometimes mix up the names. The key difference = bore size: baritone = narrower = brighter. Euphonium = wider = warmer. Check the bore size! .500" = baritone. .580"+ = euphonium.
💰 Why Buy Used
📐 Significant savings!
Yamaha YEP-642 new = $3000–5000. Used = $1500–3000. Besson Prestige new = $5000–8000. Used = $2500–5000. Student Yamaha/Jupiter used = from $500! For a wind orchestra or school = used is an excellent option!
📐 For an orchestra = you need several!
A wind orchestra = 2–4 baritones + 2–4 euphoniums. Buying 4–8 new = VERY expensive. Used = a realistic way to outfit a section! After service at «SoundsGood Services» = every one plays like new.
📐 Brass lasts forever!
Like all brass instruments — baritones and euphoniums are durable. Brass body doesn't age. Valves can be serviced. A 20-year-old used euphonium after service = plays wonderfully!
🎺 Used Models We Carry
📐 Euphoniums ⭐⭐
Yamaha YEP-321 ⭐ = student, 4 valves, reliable. Yamaha YEP-642 ⭐⭐ = professional, 4 valves, compensating system! Besson Prestige BE2052 ⭐ = premium brass band. Besson Sovereign = classic. Miraphone = German premium. A used euphonium = often the only affordable way to get a Besson Prestige!
📐 Baritones
Yamaha YBH-301 = student baritone, reliable. Besson Baritone = brass band standard. Jupiter = student, affordable. Used baritones = less common than euphoniums but available!
📐 Marching
Marching baritone / euphonium! For marching bands. Yamaha, Jupiter, King. Bell faces forward (unlike concert = upward). Used marching = significant savings for school bands!
🔧 Service at «SoundsGood Services»
📐 The Only Official Repair Center! ⭐⭐
«SoundsGood Services» = the only official wind instrument repair center in Ukraine! Every used baritone and euphonium undergoes full service before sale. Professional technicians, specialized equipment.
📐 What we check
1. Valves: smoothness, airtightness, springs. 2. Compensating system (4th valve, if present!) = checking additional loops. 3. Tuning slides: smoothness. 4. Body: dents (we remove them!). 5. Cleaning: ultrasonic. 6. Player test.
📐 Compensating system — special! ⭐
Professional euphoniums (Yamaha 642, Besson Prestige) = compensating system! Additional tubing loops that correct intonation when using the 4th valve. Complex mechanism! Requires airtightness check of each loop. «SoundsGood Services» technicians = experienced with compensating systems!
📐 Warranty from «SoundsGood Services»!
Every used instrument = with warranty! Any issue = free repair at «SoundsGood Services» — the only official wind instrument repair center in Ukraine.
🔍 What to Look For
📐 Valves ⭐⭐
3 or 4 valves = all must move smoothly! Press = smooth down. Release = spring returns instantly. 4th valve = check especially carefully (used less often = may stick from irregular use). At SoundsGood = valves lapped by «SoundsGood Services»!
📐 Compensating system
If the euphonium has compensation: check that ALL valve combinations = airtight. Compensating loops = additional joints = additional leak points. At «SoundsGood Services» we check every loop!
📐 Dents
On bell = cosmetic. On body near valves = may affect function. Baritones/euphoniums = large instruments = more prone to transport dents. At SoundsGood = removed!
📐 Lacquer and finish
Lacquer = cosmetic! Worn = normal. Silver plate = tarnishes (polishes up). Some = raw brass. Doesn't affect sound!
🏷️ Brands
📐 Yamaha ⭐⭐
Most reliable! YEP-321 ⭐ = student euphonium, 4 valves. YEP-642 ⭐⭐ = professional, compensating system! Standard. YEP-842 = Custom, top. YBH-301 = baritone. Used Yamaha = minimum risk!
