🏆 Popular Used French Horns

💰 Why a Used French Horn — The Best Deal Among Wind Instruments

📐 The most expensive wind instrument!

The French horn = one of the most expensive wind instruments. A new professional double (Hans Hoyer, Alexander, Paxman) = $5000–15000! Even an intermediate Yamaha = $3000–5000. For most students and amateurs = shocking prices. Used = $2000–7000 for a professional one! The difference is enormous.

📐 Used double = price of a new single!

A new single (F or Bb) = $1500–3000. A used double (F/Bb) = from $2000! For the same price you get a DOUBLE — full range! This is the main argument: a used double > a new single. Double = the standard for serious playing!

📐 Brass + nickel silver = forever!

French horn = brass and nickel silver body. Doesn't age or degrade. A Conn 8D from the 1960s = plays beautifully! The rotary mechanism needs maintenance but with proper service = decades of use. «SoundsGood Services» provides full rotor service!

📯 Double vs Single French Horn

📐 Double (F/Bb) ⭐⭐

THE STANDARD! Two sets of tubing: F (main, warm) and Bb (auxiliary, brighter upper register). Thumb valve switches between them. Full range! Low register = F. High = Bb. For music school, orchestra, serious playing = ONLY double! Heavier (~2.5–3 kg) but this is the standard.

📐 Single (F or Bb)

Cheaper and lighter! Only one set of tubing. F = warm, classic, but upper register is difficult. Bb = easier upper, but less warm bottom. For: beginners (1–2 years), children's programs, when weight matters. Then = upgrade to double!

📐 Used double = the solution!

Problem: new double = very expensive. New single = cheaper but limited. Solution: used double! Price = same as a new single. Quality = same as a new double (after service at «SoundsGood Services»). Win-win!

📯 Used French Horns We Carry

📐 Yamaha Doubles ⭐⭐

Most reliable used! YHR-567 ⭐ = intermediate double, excellent value. Geyer wrap. YHR-668 / 668D ⭐ = professional. YHR-871 (Custom) = top. Used Yamaha = minimum risk, consistent quality in every example!

📐 Conn 8D ⭐

The «American» horn legend! Conn 8D = the standard of American orchestras for decades. Large bell (12.25"), powerful, «wide» sound. Chicago Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra = Conn 8D. A used 8D = every American horn player's dream! Kruspe wrap.

📐 Hans Hoyer (Germany) ⭐

📐 Holton (USA)

Classic American! Holton H179 = intermediate/professional. Farkas model. A used Holton = affordable alternative to Conn 8D.

📐 Jupiter / Eastman

Student! A used Jupiter = the most affordable first horn. For: beginners, school programs. After service at «SoundsGood Services» = reliable start!

🔧 French Horn Service at «SoundsGood Services»

📐 The Only Official Repair Center! ⭐⭐

«SoundsGood Services» = the only official wind instrument repair center in Ukraine! The French horn = the most complex brass instrument! The rotary mechanism requires specialized skills. Our technicians = experienced with all rotor types!

📐 Rotors — The Key! ⭐⭐

The rotary mechanism = the «heart» of a French horn! What we check: 1) Smooth rotation of each rotor. 2) Airtightness (no air leaks). 3) Linkages = straight, no bends. 4) Springs = return instantly. 5) Lubrication = special rotor oil. Rotor repair = complex work requiring experience!

📐 Body and slides

Body inspection: dents (we remove them!), lacquer condition. Tuning slides (F and Bb) = smoothness, airtightness. Ultrasonic cleaning = removing calcium buildup from the long tubing (a French horn = 3.7 meters of tubing!). Bell and body polishing.

📐 Testing & Warranty

After service = tested by a professional horn player! Checking: intonation (the horn is the most demanding for intonation!), response across all registers, every rotor's operation. Warranty from «SoundsGood Services»! Any issue = free repair. The only official repair center = your confidence!

🔍 What to Look For

📐 Rotors ⭐⭐

THE MOST IMPORTANT! Press each valve lever: the rotor must spin smoothly, no sticking, no play. Release: spring returns instantly and crisply. Delay, «gumminess», clicking = needs repair. Rotor repair = expensive! At SoundsGood = rotors checked and serviced by «SoundsGood Services».

📐 Linkages

Mechanical connections between levers and rotors. Must be straight, no bends. A bent linkage = rotor doesn't work properly. We check every one!

📐 Dents

French horn = complex tubing geometry! Small dents = cosmetic. Near rotors or on slides = may affect intonation. At «SoundsGood Services» = professionally removed!

📐 Intonation!

French horn = the most demanding for intonation! Every horn has its «problem» notes. Check with a tuner: all natural harmonics, problem F#, A, Bb. Our test = intonation check!

📐 Kruspe vs Geyer wrap

Two types of wrap: Kruspe = F/Bb switch on top, Conn 8D style. Geyer (Knopf) = switch on bottom, Yamaha style. Different ergonomic approach. Both are standards. Try what feels comfortable!

🏷️ Used French Horn Brands

📐 Yamaha ⭐⭐

Most reliable! YHR-314 = student single. YHR-567 ⭐ = intermediate double (Geyer). YHR-668D ⭐ = professional (detachable bell). YHR-871 Custom = top. Yamaha = consistent quality, every example predictable.

📐 Conn (USA) ⭐

Conn 8D ⭐ = LEGEND! American orchestral standard. Large bell, powerful «wide» sound. Kruspe wrap. Conn 6D = smaller, for students. A used 8D = a classic that holds value!

📐 Hans Hoyer (Germany) ⭐

Premium! 6801, 6802 = professional. Deep «German» sound. For: European orchestral style. Used = rare but an investment!

📐 Alexander (Germany)

«Rolls-Royce»! Alexander 103 = the most famous horn in the world. Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna = Alexander. New = $10000+. Used = from $5000.

📐 Holton / Paxman / Jupiter

Holton H179 = classic American (Farkas). Paxman (England) = premium, popular in UK. Jupiter = student, affordable.

🎯 How to Choose

📯 Beginner

Used Jupiter single or Yamaha YHR-314 ⭐! After service at «SoundsGood Services» = reliable start. Or used double Yamaha YHR-567 = BETTER! Same price as a new single.

📯 Music school student

Used Yamaha YHR-567 double ⭐⭐! Must be double! A single is not enough for serious study. Used 567 = the ideal balance!

📯 Professional

Used Yamaha YHR-668D, Conn 8D or Hans Hoyer ⭐! Or Alexander 103 if budget allows. Try several — every horn has its character!

📯 «American» sound

Used Conn 8D ⭐! Kruspe wrap, large bell. Chicago / Philadelphia style.

📯 «European» sound

Used Hans Hoyer or Alexander! Geyer wrap, deep «German» tone. Berlin / Vienna style.

⚠️ ONLY double!

For serious playing = double (F/Bb)! Single = first year only. A used double = price of a new single. No reason not to!

⚠️ Rotors!

Check rotors = #1! Rotor repair = expensive. At SoundsGood = rotors checked by «SoundsGood Services» — the only official repair center!

⚠️ Don't buy from classifieds!

A French horn from OLX = the highest risk among brass! Rotary mechanism can't be checked from photos. Repair = expensive. At SoundsGood = full service + warranty!
