Flush valves with warm water (old oil residue, dirt). Dry. Apply fresh oil. Still stuck? Take to a technician (possible dent or wear).

⚠️ Rules

NEVER WD-40, cooking oil, or vaseline! Don't mix brands (flush before switching). Only instrument-specific oil. Valve oil costs $5 — don't risk a $500–5000 instrument!

❓ FAQ

How often?

Valve oil (pistons): daily before playing (2–5 drops per valve). Rotor oil: weekly (1–2 drops). Slide cream (trombone): every 2–3 days + water spray daily. Slide grease (crooks): monthly.

Light / Regular / Heavy?

Light: for new tight-tolerance instruments (new Yamaha Xeno, new Bach Strad). Faster but shorter lasting. Regular: for most instruments (standard). Heavy: for older instruments with wear between piston and casing. Longer lasting. Not sure = Regular.

Valve oil on rotors?

Light valve oil = OK in a pinch. But proper rotor oil = better (correct viscosity for rotary mechanism). NEVER use Regular/Heavy valve oil on rotors!

WD-40?

NEVER! Damages lacquer finish, leaves sticky residue, can corrode. Only instrument-specific oil! Valve oil costs $5 — don't risk your instrument.

How to use Slide-O-Mix?

1) Remove inner slide. 2) Apply Bottle 1 (cream/emulsion) in thin layer. 3) Insert slide. 4) Spray Bottle 2 (lubricant) on outer slide. 5) Move slide several times. During the day: spray Bottle 2 if drying out.

Synthetic or mineral?

Most modern oils = synthetic (petroleum-based or fully synthetic). Cleaner, less residue. Some = natural (Bio-Oil etc.). For most players = doesn't matter. Key: instrument-specific, not household!
