🎻 What Are Pegs
📐 Tuning the instrument!
Pegs = tapered pieces in the pegbox. String wound on peg. Turn = change tension = tune pitch. 4 pegs = 4 strings. Quality = directly affects tuning ease and accuracy.
📐 Common problems
Slipping? Sticking? Most common issues! Causes: wear, humidity changes, poor fit. Solution: replace (wooden or mechanical) or have luthier adjust.
📐 Two types
Friction (wooden) = traditional. Held by taper friction. Mechanical (planetary geared) = modern. Internal gear = smooth, precise tuning without slipping.
⚙️ Mechanical (Planetary Geared)
📐 Wittner Fine-Tune ⭐⭐ (Germany)
THE STANDARD! 8:1 gear ratio = very precise. Press-fit (no glue!) = easy to install and remove. Composite = looks like ebony. Unaffected by humidity. ~$50–80. For violin, viola, cello. Our #1 recommendation!
📐 Knilling Perfection ⭐ (USA)
Planetary 4:1. Heads = ebony, rosewood or synthetic. Looks like regular wooden pegs! Requires glue. ~$50–80. 100,000+ installed worldwide.
📐 PegHeds ⭐ (USA)
The original! Knilling = licensed PegHeds design. Same 4:1 construction. Wooden heads available. ~$60–100. Inventor = Chuck Herin.
📐 Grover (USA)
Variable friction (Caspari type). ~$30–50.
📐 Why mechanical?
No slipping. No sticking. Humidity-independent! Ideal for children, beginners, arthritis. Replace fine tuners = lighter tailpiece = better sound.
🪵 Wooden (Friction)
📐 Tempel ⭐⭐ (Germany)
Premium! Models: Hill, Heart, Swiss. Ebony, rosewood, boxwood. ~$25–60. For professional instruments.
📐 Bogaro & Clemente ⭐ (Italy)
Premium Italian! Cremona. ~$30–60.
📐 Peykov & Son (Bulgaria)
Premium handmade. ~$25–50.
📐 ACURA / Cremona Tools
Preciso = standard. Maestro = premium. ~$15–40.
📐 Winterling (Germany)
Student grade. ~$10–25.
📐 Hill model
Hill = SHAPE, not a brand! Most popular peg shape worldwide. Most manufacturers make "Hill model."
🌳 Materials
📐 Ebony ⭐
Most popular! Black. Hardest. Most durable. ~$15–40.
📐 Rosewood
Brown-red. Beautiful. Own resin (less slipping). ~$15–40.
📐 Boxwood
Yellow-brown. Softer. Classic "baroque" look. ~$15–35.
📐 Pernambuco
Rare! Same wood as bows. ~$40–80.
🔧 Installation
📐 ⚠️ LUTHIER ONLY!
Requires a special reamer. Taper 1:30. Wrong installation = cracked pegbox = expensive repair!
📐 What the luthier does
1) Selects size. 2) Reams holes. 3) Fits taper. 4) Installs. ~30–60 min.
📐 Peg compound
Hill Peg Paste = for wooden pegs. Reduces slipping and sticking. ~$3–5. Often solves the problem without replacing pegs!
