Why does a wash head need zoom and what range?

Zoom is the wash head's main optical function: it changes the beam angle from narrow (4–10°) to wide (45–60°), and does so motorised — right within show scenes. A narrow angle turns the wash into almost a beam — a dense coloured ray for effects in haze and long throws; a wide angle evenly covers the stage or backdrop from a close truss. The wider the zoom range, the more flexible the fixture: the same head works as dance-floor coverage in the evening and narrows into a ray at the climax. What are pixel control and ring effects?

In higher-end wash heads the LEDs are grouped into zones — individual pixels or concentric rings, each driven by its own DMX channels. This unlocks a separate layer of effects: colour waves running across the array, spinning vortices, pulses from centre to edge, and in models with an illuminated front glass — graphic animations visible to the audience right on the lens. The fixture works simultaneously as coverage and as a visual object on stage. The trade-off is a sharp rise in DMX channel count (up to 60–100+ in pixel mode), so you need a console or software that handles large fixtures, or the unit's built-in macros. For club tasks, ordinary 3–4-zone models are enough.

A wash head or a static LED wash / PAR?

They are not competitors but two layers of one system. Static PARs and wash panels give constant, even stage coverage — cheaper per watt, no complex programming, and they always light where they are aimed. Wash heads add motion: colour follows the performer, coverage jumps from stage to hall, beams gather into fans — dynamics that statics cannot deliver. The practical scheme: build the base light level on PARs (front and backlight), and place wash heads on the rear truss or floor as the dynamic layer.
