🔍 What to look for when choosing

📏 Size per instrument

Choose by exact diameter and depth; marching drums are often deeper than kit drums. For tenors, factor in the set configuration.

🛡️ Protection type

A soft case for daily carrying, a hard case for touring. Foam, reinforced corners and water-repellent material matter.

🎒 Portability

Comfortable straps, sturdy handles, and for large instruments — wheels. Critical for transporting bass drums and tenors.

🗂️ Pockets & organisation

Extra pockets for sticks, keys, heads and small hardware keep the section organised on tour.

❓ Frequently asked questions

What cases and bags do marching instruments need?

Cases or bags for each instrument: for snares, for tenors (sized to the set), for bass drums (large, with reinforced walls), plus bags for sticks and small items. There are soft padded cases for daily carrying and hard cases (flight cases) for maximum protection on tour. Carrier cases are often added. The right case protects from impacts, moisture and dust.

How does a soft case differ from a hard case?

A soft case of durable textile (nylon, Cordura) with a padded lining — light, compact, for daily carrying and basic protection. A hard case (flight case) has a rigid shell of ABS, plywood or moulded material and gives maximum protection on tour and flights, but is heavier and pricier. For daily playing a bag is enough; for touring a hard case is better.

How to choose a case size for a drum?

By exact dimensions — diameter and depth. Marching drums are often deeper than kit drums, so look for the 'marching' label. For tenors factor in the set configuration (4/5/6 drums), for bass — the large diameter. Better slightly oversized than too small. Send the model and dimensions — we'll pick a case that fits exactly.

Do you need cases for carriers and sticks?

Yes, these are handy accessories. A carrier case protects the gear and lets you transport it separately from the drum. A stick bag keeps the whole section's sticks in one place with pockets for different types and small items. For ensembles this is especially convenient — everything organised and nothing lost on tour. Inexpensive but greatly simplifies logistics.

What's better for touring and travel?

For active touring and flights, hard cases (flight cases) are better — they protect best from impacts and pressure; for large instruments wheeled cases are useful. For occasional travel a quality soft case with reinforced corners is enough. Reliable straps, handles and water-repellent material matter. For a section, unified cases for all instruments are convenient.

What materials are cases made of?

Soft ones — from nylon or Cordura with a padded lining; the best have a water-repellent coating, reinforced corners and quality zippers. Hard ones — from ABS plastic, polyethylene, moulded material or plywood with metal hardware and soft padding inside. Weight, protection and price depend on the material. Brands — Protection Racket, Tama, Gator, SKB, Humes & Berg.

How much do cases and bags cost?

A wide range: stick bags and basic cases are affordable, cases with reinforced protection a bit more, hard cases and flight cases (especially for basses and tenors) the most expensive. The price depends on brand, instrument size and protection level. For a section it's economical to outfit at once. Check current prices with a manager.
