❓ Frequently asked questions
What are timbales?
A pair of shallow single-headed metal drums on a stand, played with sticks. Of Afro-Cuban origin, they give a loud bright cutting sound. The backbone of salsa, mambo and cha-cha-cha, as well as jazz and pop. A set usually includes cowbells, often a woodblock.
What are timbales made of?
Two metal drums on a stand: the smaller 'macho' (higher) and the larger 'hembra' (lower). Each has a shell (steel, brass or bronze), a single head, a rim and lugs. Cowbells (mambo and cha-cha bell) and often a woodblock are mounted on the stand. Played with sticks on the heads and shells (paila).
How do you play timbales?
Played standing, with sticks: strikes on the head, playing on the metal shell ('paila'), strikes on the cowbells, effects like the 'abanico'. Timbales drive and accent the Latin rhythm section. Accessible for beginners, offering room for virtuosos.
Steel or brass?
Steel timbales — a loud, bright, cutting sound, a classic of salsa and the most affordable option. Brass and bronze sound warmer and richer — for recording and higher-level concerts. The material and thickness of the metal affect the volume and character of the tone.
What sizes are there?
Standard — about 13"+14" (macho and hembra), also 14"+15". There are smaller 'timbalitos' (~9–10") for accents. A smaller diameter — a higher, sharper sound, a larger one — lower and fuller. For the stage, 13"+14" is usually taken.
What accessories do you need?
A stand (often included), timbale sticks (thinner than drumsticks), one or two cowbells with a mount, optionally a woodblock. Also replacement heads, a key and bags. Many sets already include a stand and cowbells.
Who are they for?
Percussionists, drummers, musicians of Latin, jazz and pop bands, studios and schools. A key instrument of salsa, mambo and cha-cha-cha, also used in modern music. Beginners start with sets, pros choose brass models.
