🎺 Mutes by Instrument

🎺 Trumpet (Bb / C)

Widest selection! Straight, cup, harmon, plunger, bucket, practice, whisper, pixie. Denis Wick, Harmon, Jo-Ral, Tom Crown, Humes & Berg, sshhmute, Yamaha Silent Brass. Essential minimum: straight + practice. Jazz: + harmon + plunger.

🎺 Cornet

Smaller bell than trumpet! Requires cornet-specific mutes (or universal). Denis Wick — dedicated cornet line. Straight DW5534 (~$35). Cup DW5535 (~$50). Not every trumpet mute fits a cornet!

📯 Trombone (tenor)

Bigger bell = bigger mutes. Straight, cup, harmon, plunger, bucket, practice. Denis Wick DW5505 straight (~$50 ⭐). Jo-Ral TRB1A (~$35). Cup: Denis Wick DW5533 (~$65). Harmon: Jo-Ral TRB6 (~$50). Yamaha Silent Brass SB5X (~$160).

📯 Trombone (bass)

Even bigger bell! Special sizes. Denis Wick DW5506 straight bass trombone (~$60). Smaller selection than tenor. Check compatibility with your bell!

🎵 French Horn

Unique mutes! Straight (inserted into bell). Stopping mute — fully closes bell, transposes down a semitone! Denis Wick DW5524 straight (~$55). Denis Wick DW5528 stopping (~$60). Practice: Yamaha Silent Brass SB3X (~$170).

🎵 Flugelhorn

Conical bell! Requires flugelhorn-specific mutes. Denis Wick DW5512 straight (~$45). Cup: DW5541 (~$55). Limited selection compared to trumpet. Trumpet mutes do NOT fit!

🎵 Tuba / Euphonium

Large bell = large mutes! Smaller selection. Straight: Denis Wick euphonium DW5542 (~$70), tuba DW5518 (~$120+). Practice: Yamaha Silent Brass euphonium SB2X (~$180). More expensive due to size.

📐 Straight Mute

📐 What is it

Cone-shaped mute inserted into the bell. Held by cork strips. Tone: brighter, nasal, "metallic." Slightly reduces volume. The #1 standard for all brass! Orchestral notation "con sordino" = straight mute.

📐 Material

Aluminium: standard. Bright, clear. Denis Wick, Jo-Ral, Tom Crown. Copper: warmer. Tom Crown copper bottom. Fiber (Stonelined): Humes & Berg. Warm, less "edgy." Aluminium = orchestral standard.

🎺 Trumpet

Denis Wick DW5504 ⭐ (~$40): orchestral standard. Jo-Ral TPT1A (~$30 ⭐): best value. Tom Crown 30TAC (~$35). Humes & Berg 101 (~$25): fiber, warmer.

🎷 Harmon Mute (wah-wah)

📐 What is it

Metal mute with a removable stem (tube). Fully seals the bell. Tone: buzzy, electronic, intimate. Miles Davis "Kind of Blue"! The most recognisable muted sound in jazz. Stem out = Miles tone. Stem in = wah-wah by hand.

🎺 Trumpet

Harmon Wow-Wow ⭐ (~$35): THE original! Jo-Ral TPT6A (~$40): bubbles. Denis Wick DW5526 (~$45): adjustable stem. Tom Crown (~$40).

📯 Trombone

Jo-Ral TRB6 ⭐ (~$50). Denis Wick (~$55). Harmon (~$45). Trombone harmon = deeper buzzy tone.

🖐️ Plunger Mute

📐 What is it

Rubber cup (looks like a plunger!). Held by hand in front of the bell. NOT inserted. Open/closed = "wah-wah" effect. Notation: "+" = closed, "o" = open. Swing, blues, Duke Ellington, big band.

🎺 Trumpet

Humes & Berg ⭐ (~$15). Denis Wick DW5506 (~$18). Or: an actual rubber plunger (~$3–5)! Many pros use one (just make sure it's new and clean!).

📯 Trombone

Humes & Berg (~$20): larger size. Denis Wick (~$22). Plunger size must match the trombone bell (bigger than trumpet!).

🪣 Bucket Mute

📐 What is it

Large cup filled with felt/foam. Hangs on the bell (clips or magnets). NOT inserted. Tone: softest, "distant," "from another room," veiled. For: jazz ballads, "night" tone, orchestral pp.

📯 Trombone

Humes & Berg (~$45 ⭐). Denis Wick (~$55). Soulo (~$60, magnetic). Larger size = higher price.

🔕 Practice Mute

📐 What is it

🎺 Trumpet (passive)

sshhmute ⭐ (~$100): quietest! Minimal effect on intonation. Denis Wick (~$30): budget. Best Brass e-Brass III (~$80).

🎯 How to Choose

🎵 First mute

Straight mute! For any brass instrument. The #1 standard. "Con sordino" = straight. Every brass player must own one!

🎵 Orchestra (minimum)

Straight + Cup. French horn: + stopping mute. Denis Wick — fullest orchestral range.

🎵 Jazz (minimum)

Harmon + Plunger + Cup. Straight for big band. Harmon = Miles Davis. Plunger = Ellington wah-wah.

🎵 Home practice

Yamaha Silent Brass ⭐: best (practice + headphones). Or: sshhmute (quietest passive). Budget: Denis Wick practice.

🎵 Full set (trumpet)

Straight + Cup + Harmon + Plunger + Bucket = ~$150–200. Covers 99% of situations. + Practice for home.

🎵 Full set (trombone)

Straight + Cup + Harmon + Plunger + Bucket = ~$200–300. Larger sizes = higher prices. + Practice for home.

⚠️ Tips

Check your bell size! Trumpet ≠ cornet ≠ flugelhorn. Tenor trombone ≠ bass trombone. Corks wear out — replace when the mute wobbles. Do NOT leave mutes in the bell for long periods.

❓ FAQ

Does a mute change intonation?

Slightly! Straight = usually sharper. Harmon = may sharpen. Practice = changes significantly. Quality mute = less change. Denis Wick / Jo-Ral = minimal effect. Adjust with your tuning slide.

Will a trumpet mute fit a cornet?

Not always! Cornet bell is smaller and shaped differently. Some mutes are universal (trumpet/cornet), but it's better to buy cornet-specific. Denis Wick has separate lines.

Aluminium or fiber?

Aluminium: brighter, projecting. Orchestral standard. Fiber (Stonelined): warmer, softer, less "metallic." Orchestra = aluminium. Jazz / quieter = fiber may be nicer.

What is a stopping mute?

French horn only! Fully closes the bell. Transposes a semitone. Bright, "brassy" tone. NOT for trumpet or trombone. Essential for horn players!

Practice mute vs Silent Brass?

Practice (passive): just quiet. Cheaper (~$30–100). You hear yourself "muffled." Silent Brass (electronic): quiet + headphones with natural sound and reverb (~$140–180). Budget = practice. Serious = Silent Brass.

How many mutes do I need?

Minimum: 1 (straight). Orchestra: 2–3 (straight + cup; horn + stopping). Jazz: 3–4 (harmon + plunger + cup + straight). Full: 5–6 + practice for home.

Plunger — buy or use an actual plunger?

Both work! Musical plunger = correct size, quality rubber. An actual rubber plunger (new!) = works great for $3–5. Many pros use a hardware-store plunger.
