Straight, Cup, Harmon, Practice
📐 Straight Mute
📐 What is it
Cone-shaped mute inserted into the bell. Held by cork strips. Tone: brighter, nasal, "metallic." Slightly reduces volume. The #1 standard! Orchestral notation "con sordino" = straight mute. Trombone straight is larger and heavier than trumpet.
📐 Material
Aluminium: standard. Bright, clear, projecting. Denis Wick, Jo-Ral, Tom Crown. Copper: warmer, softer. Tom Crown copper bottom. Fiber (Stonelined): Humes & Berg. Warmer, less "edgy." Aluminium = orchestral standard.
📐 Models (tenor)
Denis Wick DW5505 ⭐: aluminium. Orchestral standard! ~$45–55. Jo-Ral TRB1A ⭐: aluminium. ~$30–40. Excellent value. Tom Crown: ~$40–50. Humes & Berg 152 Stonelined: fiber, warm. ~$30–40.
📐 Models (bass)
Denis Wick DW5506 ⭐: bass trombone. ~$55–70. Jo-Ral TRB1B: bass trombone. ~$40–50. Important: tenor mutes do NOT fit bass trombone! Bigger bell = bigger mute.
📐 Usage
Orchestra: "con sordino" passages. Mahler, Shostakovich, Barton, Ravel, Stravinsky. Jazz: big band section parts. Marching: special effects. Every trombonist MUST own a straight mute!
☕ Cup Mute
📐 What is it
Straight mute + a cup covering the bell. Tone: soft, muffled, "distant," gentle. Much quieter than straight. Adjustable cup! Closer to bell = softer. Farther = brighter.
📐 Usage
Jazz: ballads, quiet big band moments, "distant" effect. Orchestra: modern scores, quiet moments. Studio: soft tone for recording. Cup mute on trombone = deep, velvety tone.
📐 Models (tenor)
Denis Wick DW5533 ⭐: adjustable cup. ~$55–75. Standard. Jo-Ral TRB2: ~$45–55. Tom Crown: ~$50–60. Humes & Berg 154 Stonelined: fiber. ~$35–50.
📐 Models (bass)
Denis Wick DW5534: bass trombone cup. ~$70–90. Selection for bass trombone is limited. Check your bell size!
🎷 Harmon Mute (wah-wah)
📐 What is it
Metal mute with a removable stem (tube). Fully seals the bell (air exits only through the stem or opening). Tone: buzzy, electronic, "metallic," intimate. On trombone = deep buzzy tone, very striking.
📐 Stem in / stem out
Stem in: buzzy, directed tone. Wah-wah by hand (opening/closing the stem). Stem out: wider, more open tone. On trombone, stem out = deep, intimate tone for ballads.
📐 Models
Jo-Ral TRB6 ⭐: bubbles harmon. ~$45–55. Clean, open. Harmon original (trombone): ~$40–50. Denis Wick: adjustable stem. ~$50–65. Tom Crown: ~$45–55.
📐 Usage
Jazz: ballads, cool jazz, solos. Big band: section buzzy effect. Studio: specific tone. Orchestra: some modern pieces. Trombone harmon = more powerful, deeper buzz than trumpet.
🖐️ Plunger Mute
📐 What is it
Rubber cup (looks like a plunger!). Held by hand in front of the bell. NOT inserted — held with the left hand (right hand on slide). For trombone the plunger is BIGGER than for trumpet (larger bell). Open/closed = "wah-wah" effect.
📐 Sound & technique
"+" = closed, "o" = open. Movement between them = "doo-wah." Tricky Williams, J.J. Johnson, Slide Hampton. Swing, blues, big band growl. On trombone, plunger + growl = powerful "dirty" effect!
📐 Models
Humes & Berg (trombone) ⭐: ~$18–25. Standard, correct size. Denis Wick: rubber. ~$18–25. Or: a large rubber plunger (~$3–5)! For trombone you need a bigger one than for trumpet. Many pros use a hardware-store plunger.
🪣 Bucket Mute
📐 What is it
Large cup filled with felt/foam. Hangs on the bell (clips or magnets). NOT inserted. Tone: softest, "distant," "from another room," veiled. On trombone = deep, velvety, "night" tone.
📐 Usage
The softest effect of any mute! Reduces brightness and projection maximally. Jazz ballads, "night" big band tone, orchestral pp moments. Often used in big band charts for quiet trombone sections.
📐 Models
Humes & Berg 160 Stonelined ⭐: clips. ~$40–55. Classic. Denis Wick DW5525: ~$50–65. Soulo (trombone): magnetic attachment! ~$55–70. More convenient for quick changes.
🔕 Practice Mute
📐 What is it
Maximum volume reduction for home practice. Neighbours won't hear! NOT for performance (affects intonation and response). For: apartment, hotel, late night. Trombone without a practice mute = very loud for an apartment!
📐 Passive
sshhmute (trombone) ⭐: one of the quietest! ~$110–130. Minimal effect on intonation. Denis Wick: ~$35–45. Budget. Best Brass e-Brass III (trombone): ~$90–110.
📐 Electronic (Silent Brass)
Yamaha Silent Brass SB5X ⭐: practice mute + mic + headphones! Play quietly but HEAR yourself with reverb. ~$150–170. The best home solution for trombonists! Bluetooth = connect to phone/tablet.
📐 Trade-offs
Practice mute = a trade-off. Intonation changes (mouthpiece feels "tighter"). More resistance. Slide movement is harder (more weight). Does NOT replace open playing! But: better to practise with a mute than not at all. Yamaha Silent Brass = least compromise.
🎭 Other Mute Types
📐 Whisper / Whispa
Like practice but for performance. Very quiet, distant tone. Humes & Berg Whisper (trombone) ~$30. For: special effects, theatre.
📐 Pixie Mute
Small straight with open end. Buzzy, bright. Humes & Berg (trombone) ~$25. For: novelty effects, swing.
📐 Solotone / Cleartone
Straight with adjustable opening. Mix of straight + harmon character. ~$30–50.
📐 Derby / Hat Mute
A metal "hat"! Held by hand in front of bell. Big band effects. Trombone derby = large, visually striking on stage.

Straight mute! Jo-Ral TRB1A (~$35 ⭐, best value) or Denis Wick DW5505 (~$50 ⭐, standard). Every trombonist must own one!
🎵 Orchestra (minimum)
Straight (Denis Wick ~$50 ⭐) + Cup (Denis Wick ~$65). "Con sordino" = straight. "Cup mute" = cup. Add a practice mute for home.

Harmon (Jo-Ral ~$50 ⭐) + Plunger (~$20) + Cup (~$50). Straight for big band sections. Harmon for solo ballads.
🎵 Full set
Straight + Cup + Harmon + Plunger + Bucket = ~$200–300. Covers 99% of situations. Add practice for home. Total ~$350–450.
🎵 Home practice

🎵 Budget
Jo-Ral straight (~$35) + Harmon original (~$45) + rubber plunger (~$5) = ~$85. Minimal jazz kit!
⚠️ Tenor vs Bass
Check your bell size! Tenor trombone ≠ bass trombone. Tenor mutes do NOT fit bass! Denis Wick, Jo-Ral = separate models. Corks wear out — replace them.
❓ FAQ
Will a tenor trombone mute fit a bass trombone?
NO! Bass trombone has a larger bell. You need bass trombone–specific mutes. Denis Wick: DW5505 (tenor) vs DW5506 (bass). Always check the size!
Does a mute change intonation?
Slightly! Straight = usually sharper. Harmon = may sharpen. Practice = changes significantly. Quality mute = less change. Denis Wick, Jo-Ral = minimal effect. Adjust with your tuning slide.
Harmon — stem in or out?
Stem out: wider, more open tone. For jazz ballads. Stem in: buzzy, directed. Wah-wah by hand. Most jazz = stem out. Big band effects = stem in + wah.
Trombone plunger = a real plunger?
Yes, but BIGGER! A regular trumpet plunger is too small. You need a large rubber plunger or a trombone-specific one (Humes & Berg, Denis Wick). Size matters!
Practice mute vs Silent Brass?
Practice (passive): just quiet. Cheaper (~$40–120). You hear yourself "muffled." Silent Brass SB5X (electronic): quiet + headphones with natural sound and reverb (~$160). Budget = practice. Serious = Silent Brass.
How many mutes do I need?
Minimum: 1 (straight). Orchestra: 2 (straight + cup). Jazz: 3–4 (harmon + plunger + cup + straight). Full: 5–6 + practice for home. Build your collection gradually!
Aluminium or fiber?
Aluminium: brighter, projecting. Orchestral standard. Fiber (Stonelined): warmer, softer. Orchestra = aluminium. Jazz / quieter = fiber may be nicer.
