Selection guide

Active multiway systems

Assign a frequency band and amplification channel to each driver. Check filter types, slopes, frequency ranges and setting storage. Choose crossover points according to the exact driver requirements and their cabin placement.

Factory-system compatibility

Provide the vehicle model, year and trim together with factory audio details. Versions of the same car may have different amplifiers, connectors and controls. Confirm required adapters and retention of the functions you use.

Mounting dimensions

Assess available space, fixing points and cable routes. Nominal size does not replace a drawing: depth, protrusions and connection clearance matter. Match installation to the vehicle interior and equipment requirements.

Component matching

Compare signal types, channel count and electrical requirements throughout the setup. Compare speaker and amplifier ratings under equivalent measurement conditions. Correct installation and adjustment matter alongside the choice of individual components.

When a car audio system needs a crossover processor

A crossover processor divides frequency bands before amplification. In a fully active system, each tweeter, midrange driver or midbass unit receives a dedicated output and amplifier channel. Independent adjustment becomes possible, but the wiring and channel plan must be correct. Adding a processor ahead of a component set that still uses its passive crossover does not automatically create a fully active system. First establish how each driver will be connected.

Count outputs according to the actual configuration. A stereo two-way active front stage uses four independent channels, while a three-way front stage uses six; a subwoofer and rear speakers may require additional outputs. Physical connector count is not always the same as independently processed channel count. Compare the routing diagram, available outputs and amplification channels. Expansion capacity is useful when you know which additional bands or listening zones it is intended to support.

Crossover frequency, slope and filter characteristic

A high-pass filter attenuates lower frequencies, while a low-pass filter attenuates higher frequencies. Together they define a working band for a midrange or midbass driver. The crossover frequency is not a sharp boundary beyond which the signal disappears. Attenuation changes progressively according to the filter order and characteristic. A slope expressed in decibels per octave describes that behaviour, but does not by itself predict the complete acoustic result inside the vehicle.

Matching frequency and slope numbers with different filter characteristics does not guarantee the same band integration. The electrical response combines with the driver's natural response, mounting arrangement and cabin acoustics. Settings from another vehicle should therefore not be copied without verification. Begin with the driver manufacturer's operating recommendations, then evaluate measurements and the combined response of adjacent bands. There is no single ideal crossover frequency for every tweeter or subwoofer.

Input routing and factory-source integration

A suitable input signal is needed before dividing it into new bands. Factory audio may already include crossovers, equalization or time alignment. Taking only one factory channel can provide an incomplete frequency range that cannot be restored by simply increasing bass or treble. Establish what reaches each processor input and whether the specific unit supports the necessary summing or correction. High-level input capability is not a promise of automatic integration with every factory system.

Label every input and output on the diagram with its actual destination: left tweeter, right midbass, subwoofer and so on. Software labels should agree with the wiring. Preserve separate stereo channels for the front stage and define how the subwoofer's mono signal is generated within the routing arrangement. Check input voltage limits, operating levels and turn-on control as well. A correct matrix cannot compensate for an overloaded input or an incorrectly connected amplifier output.

Delay, polarity and level through the crossover region

Vehicle speakers sit at different distances from the listener. Delay helps align arrival times, but should be adjusted together with the crossover arrangement. Changing a filter can alter the interaction between bands, making it necessary to check their summed response again. Polarity inversion and time delay are not interchangeable functions. An arbitrary polarity change can improve one frequency region while worsening another.

Match channel levels with driver sensitivity and amplifier gain in mind. A tweeter should not receive excessive signal merely because its numerical output setting matches the midbass channel. Establish adequate headroom throughout the signal chain before balancing the bands. Apply equalization after basic integration is sound. A deep cancellation dip should not be attacked with a large boost; inspect phase interaction, mounting and the crossover arrangement first.

Starting a fully active system safely

Before playing music, confirm that every output has the correct filtering and reaches the intended driver. Protecting tweeters from low frequencies is particularly important. Bypassing the high-pass filter on a fully active tweeter channel can damage the driver even without a high overall listening level. Do not treat filter bypass as a routine comparison on that channel. Begin at a low level and verify destinations one channel at a time.

Save a known working profile before further adjustment. Record the drivers, connections, frequencies, slopes, levels and delays for each version. After restarting the system, verify which profile loads and whether its settings have persisted. If an external controller switches presets, every accessible preset must remain suitable for the installed speakers. A profile for a different configuration should not be left available for accidental selection without validation.

Practical selection questions

Does a processor replace an amplifier? A standalone unit with line outputs does not power loudspeakers directly. It needs suitable amplification channels after it. Products with integrated amplification should be assessed separately for the number and capabilities of their powered channels.

Is the steepest available filter always best? No. The appropriate choice depends on driver limitations, relative placement and acoustic integration. Select settings for the complete system rather than the largest number in a menu.

What information helps with selection? List the source, factory audio package, every driver and amplifier, the proposed band arrangement and available mounting space. Confirm how the processor is configured, software compatibility and whether a volume controller is needed. A properly labelled system diagram reveals the entire path from source to driver, rather than only the output count, and provides a useful reference for future adjustments and servicing.
