The beater is the striking part of the pedal that hits the bass drum head. Felt beaters give a warm, softer sound; plastic ones a crisper and louder attack; wood ones the hardest hit. There are two-sided beaters with different surfaces and adjustable-weight ones. Changing the beater is a simple way to change the character of the bass drum sound. Q: What are linear and offset cams?

The cam is the part through which the drive transmits movement to the beater, and its shape determines the pedal's feel. A linear (round) cam gives an even, predictable action across the whole travel. An offset (eccentric) cam accelerates the beater towards the hit, giving more power and speed but a less linear feel. Many modern pedals have interchangeable cams to tune the action to your taste. We'll suggest a setting for your playing.

Q: Will a pedal fit my kit?

Bass drum pedals are universal: they clamp onto the bass drum's hoop and fit any acoustic kit of standard diameter. It's worth checking the hoop thickness — very thick or non-standard hoops may need a clamp adjustment. A double pedal needs a little more space to the left of the bass drum.
