Toms for the Drum Kit — Rack and Floor
Toms (tom-toms) are drums without snare wires, with a rounded, singing tone for fills and melodic movement around the kit. They come as rack toms — smaller, higher tone, mounted above the bass drum, and floor toms — larger, on legs, a deep low sound. Common sizes are 10–18″. They're matched to the rest of the kit by material and series. At SoundsGood — Pearl, Tama, Ludwig, Mapex, Yamaha and other brands, an official warranty, delivery across Ukraine. We'll suggest toms for your style and configuration.

The tom's type and size determine its tone and role. Here's how they compare.

| Floor | 14–18″ | Deep, low | On their own legs |

🔍 What to look at when choosing
📐 Size and number
Smaller — higher tone, larger — lower; more toms — a wider range for fills. For most styles 2–3 are enough.
🪵 Material and matching
Maple — balance, birch — attack. For a uniform sound, match the material and series of the rest of the kit.
🔧 Mounting
A bracket on the kick or a separate stand for rack toms, legs for floor toms. Check holder compatibility.
🎯 A pack or separately
A tom pack guarantees compatibility of sizes and timbre; when buying separately, check the brand, series and diameter.

❓ Frequently asked questions
What is a tom and what is its role?
A drum without snare wires, with a rounded singing tone for fills, transitions and melodic movement around the kit. Unlike the snare, it gives a clean tonal sound without 'crackle'. A kit usually has several toms of different sizes — from high to low. They come as rack and floor toms.
How do rack toms differ from floor toms?
Rack toms are smaller (8–13″), mount above the kick, give a higher brighter tone. Floor toms are larger (14–18″), stand on legs, give a deep low sound. A standard kit has one or two rack toms and one floor tom. The number and sizes determine the range.
What size and how many toms?
Rack toms usually 10, 12, 13″, floor toms 14, 16, 18″. The classic is one or two rack and one floor (12″+16″ or 10″+12″+14″). Smaller — higher sound, larger — lower. For most styles 2–3 toms, for progressive and metal — more.
What material should I choose?
Maple gives balance and warmth, birch attack and crispness, mahogany warm lows and vintage. Plies and thickness affect resonance. For a uniform sound, toms are matched from the same material and series as the kick and snare. Budget — poplar or combinations.
How do toms mount?
Rack — on a bracket on the kick or a separate stand (the latter gives a cleaner kick sound, virgin). Floor — on three adjustable legs. The holder must be compatible in size and type. Isolation systems reduce the effect on resonance.
How do I match them to the rest of the kit?
Match the material, series and finish for a uniform sound and look. The easiest is a tom pack of the same line (compatibility of mounts and timbre). When buying separately, look at the brand, series, diameter and depth. Deeper — fuller, shallow — faster.
How do I tune toms?
Evenly tension the top and bottom heads and match their tuning. Higher tension — a higher crisper tone, lower — deeper. Adjacent toms are tuned with a musical interval. Replace worn heads, if needed add light muffling. We'll suggest heads.
