How many channels and how much power does a dimmer need?

The number of channels is determined by how many groups of fixtures you want to control separately: one channel is one independently dimmed line. For a small stage 4–6 channels are enough, for large installations 12, 24 or 48 are taken. Power is no less important: each channel has a limit (for example a few kW), and the total power of all lamps on a channel must not exceed it. Be sure to account for protective breakers, cable cross-section and the overall load on the mains. An overloaded dimmer overheats and can fail. What is a dimming curve and lamp preheat?

A dimming curve determines how brightness changes relative to the DMX value: a linear curve gives an even change by number, while special curves (for example S-law or 'square law') make the change visually smoother to the eye, especially at low brightness. Many dimmers let you choose a curve for the lamp type and scene. Preheat is a function that keeps lamp filaments slightly warm even at zero brightness, so they light up faster and more evenly and last longer. These settings improve transition smoothness and reliability in theatre. Not all budget dimmers have curve selection and preheat. We'll advise a dimmer with the needed functions for your tasks. Q: What is a lighting dimmer?

A lighting dimmer is a power device that smoothly adjusts the brightness of connected fixtures by changing the power supplied to them. It's usually controlled over DMX512 from a lighting console or controller, and may also have manual faders or an analog input. Dimmers come multi-channel (dimmer packs of 4/6/12 channels), powerful rack ones (for permanent stages and theatres), compact inline (single-channel, in-line with the cable) and wall/architectural. Important: dimmers are intended for conventional incandescent lamps and halogen fixtures — they physically change brightness from the voltage. Dimmers are not used for LED and moving heads. Q: Dimmer pack or rack dimmer — which to choose?

It depends on scale and mobility. A multi-channel dimmer pack (4/6/12 channels) is compact and portable, convenient to carry on rental, place under a stage or on a truss for small and medium systems. A rack dimmer (12/24/48 channels) mounts in a rack cabinet, is rated for high power and many lines — a solution for permanent theatres, concert halls and TV studios with a lot of conventional light. For a single fixture an inline dimmer of one channel will do, and for a fixed decorative installation — a wall one. Q: Why can't a dimmer be used for LED?

This is critically important. A dimmer adjusts brightness by changing the shape or magnitude of the voltage on the fixture — this works for incandescent lamps and halogen fixtures that have no electronics of their own. LED fixtures and moving heads have built-in power supplies and drivers; if you power them through a dimmer and 'dim' the voltage, it causes flicker, malfunction or driver damage. LED fixture brightness is adjusted digitally over DMX inside the fixture itself, not by an external dimmer. To switch LED power, a switch pack (relay) or direct power is used. So a dimmer is only for conventional lamps; for LED — a switch pack plus DMX control. We'll advise the correct solution for your set. Don't dim LEDs with an external dimmer.

Q: How is a dimmer controlled?

The most common way is over DMX512 from a lighting console, controller or computer software: each dimmer channel is assigned a DMX address, and the console sets the brightness. Many dimmer packs also have built-in basic modes (static light, auto-chase, sound activation) for working without a console. Some models support analog control (0–10 V) or manual faders right on the body. Wall and architectural dimmers can be controlled from a panel, from a smartphone or by timer.
