A stage monitor is a wedge aimed at the performer: the front speakers play into the hall, while the artist hears themselves and the band through the monitor line. Why a stage monitor?
Front speakers play into the hall — the stage barely hears them. The wedge lies in front of the performer firing upward at 30–60°: the vocalist hears themselves and the band, stays on pitch and in sync. Active models — the amp and DSP inside, one XLR from the console.
Active or passive?
Active — the amp is factory-matched, DSP with presets, one cable, easy scaling: the choice of clubs, churches and mobile bands. Passive needs external amplifiers — valued by big touring fleets with system engineers.
8, 10, 12 or 15 inches?
8–10" — small stages, cafes, speakers (8–15 kg). 12" — the rider standard: vocals next to a band in a club; buy it if you need one model. 15" — loud stages, rock and drum fill: a dense low end without a sub. A 12" fleet + a pair of 15" covers most tasks.
How many monitors per stage?
At least one vocal wedge; the club standard is 2–4 (vocal, guitar, keys, drum fill). Each independent mix is a separate aux from the console: "more of me, less guitar". A link output chains two wedges onto one mix with a single cable.
How to beat feedback?
Geometry: the wedge sits in the mic's dead zone (for a cardioid — directly behind the capsule; for a supercardioid shift the wedge sideways to ~125°). Then — DSP monitor presets, a per-mix EQ to notch ringing frequencies, and sensible volume with no just-in-case reserve.
Does a monitor work as a regular speaker?
Yes: most wedges have an upright position and a pole flange, and DSP switches correction between monitor and FOH modes. One speaker — two scenarios: a wedge on stage and a mini-PA at a conference. It will not replace a dance rig with a subwoofer.
How much do the monitors cost?
Compact 8–10" — the entry level for cafes and speakers. 12" from JBL, RCF, Yamaha, Electro-Voice with DSP — the mid bracket, the club standard. 15" and coaxial touring models — the upper niche. Sets of several wedges get better terms. Check prices with our manager.
