Marimbas — a Warm Tone and Wide Range
A marimba is a pitched percussion instrument with wooden bars and metal resonators, played with soft mallets (often with four-mallet technique). It gives a warm, soft, deep tone and a wide range — 4–5 octaves. Student marimbas are 4–4.3 octaves, concert ones up to 5 octaves; bars of rosewood or synthetic. At SoundsGood — Yamaha, Adams, Marimba One and other brands, an official warranty, delivery across Ukraine, Prozorro tenders. We'll suggest a marimba for your level and repertoire.

❓ Frequently asked questions
What is a marimba?
A pitched percussion instrument with wooden bars of various lengths (like keys) and metal resonator tubes. Played with mallets with soft heads, often four-mallet technique. Has a warm, soft, deep, singing tone and a wide range (4–5 octaves). For orchestras, ensembles, solo playing and study.
How does it differ from a xylophone?
The marimba is larger, wider and lower range (up to 5 octaves), a warm soft longer sound. The xylophone is smaller, sounds higher, brighter, sharper and shorter. For the marimba softer yarn mallets, for the xylophone harder. The marimba is more often solo/chamber, the xylophone an orchestral accent.
How many octaves to choose?
Student — 4 or 4.3 octaves (schools, ensembles, basic repertoire). Concert — 4.5, 4.6 or 5 octaves (modern solo repertoire with the lowest notes). A larger range — a longer instrument, a higher price. For study 4–4.3, for competitions 5 octaves is better.
Rosewood or synthetic bars?
Rosewood — the warmest, richest resonant tone, the standard of concert marimbas, but more expensive and climate-sensitive. Synthetic (kelon etc.) — a slightly brighter tone, very resistant to moisture and weather, for schools and outdoors. Concerts — rosewood, reliability — synthetic.
What mallets are needed?
Mallets with yarn or cord winding around a soft/medium core — hard heads harm the bars. Softer for the lower register, harder for the upper. Many play four-mallet technique and have a set of different hardness. Bought separately.
Who needs it?
Music schools, colleges, conservatories, symphony and chamber orchestras, percussion ensembles and soloists. To equip classes, halls, for competitions and concerts. Due to the cost and size, often procured through Prozorro tenders.
How do I care for a marimba?
Rosewood is sensitive to moisture and temperature — store in a stable climate, away from sun, heating and draughts. Bars are wiped without moisture, resonators kept clean. Play only with soft mallets — hard ones leave dents. Synthetic is less demanding. Proper care — decades of service.
