🎯"The voice of jazz"
Jazz, pop, R&B, big band

🎷 What Is a Tenor Saxophone

📐 The instrument

Tenor saxophone Bb — the second most popular saxophone (after alto). Key of Bb. Larger than alto with a characteristic curved neck. Deeper, warmer, more powerful tone. Range ~2.5 octaves. Weight ~3 kg (vs alto ~2.5 kg). Needs more air and a wider embouchure.

📐 Tone & character

Warm, deep, "velvety," powerful. "Tenor" = like a tenor voice — expressive middle voice. Low register: deep, "growling," powerful. Middle: warm, lyrical, "singing." Upper: bright, piercing, "honking." The most expressive saxophone for jazz!

📐 Tenor legends

John Coltrane ⭐: "A Love Supreme," "My Favorite Things." Sonny Rollins: "Saxophone Colossus." Stan Getz ⭐: "The Girl from Ipanema" (bossa nova!). Dexter Gordon: "Go!". Michael Brecker ⭐: modern tenor. Lester Young, Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins = the founding fathers.

📐 Where it's used

Jazz ⭐⭐: the main instrument! Bebop, hard-bop, cool jazz, free jazz, fusion. Big band: tenor section. R&B / Soul: powerful solos (Junior Walker!). Rock: Bruce Springsteen (Clarence Clemons). Pop: George Michael, Tina Turner. Classical: quartet, orchestra.

🔄 Tenor vs Alto

📐 Size & weight

Tenor: larger, ~3 kg, needs bigger hands (from 12+). More air. Alto: smaller, ~2.5 kg, suits from 10+. Less air. Same fingerings! Switching between them is easy.

📐 Tone

Tenor Bb: deeper, warmer, more powerful. "Voice of jazz." Lyrical and expressive. Alto Eb: brighter, "lighter," more penetrating. More versatile. Tenor = jazz/R&B/rock. Alto = everything.

📐 Where to start

Alto = standard for beginners! Smaller, lighter, easier for children. BUT: adults who want tenor = can start on tenor! Same fingerings, easy switch. Children under 12: alto only. Teens/adults: can go straight to tenor.

📐 Mouthpieces & reeds

Different! Tenor mouthpieces and reeds are larger than alto. NOT compatible! Tenor = its own mouthpiece + reeds. But: the strap can be shared (BG, Neotech).

❓ FAQ

Can I start on tenor?

Yes, if you're an adult! Same fingerings as alto. Tenor is bigger and heavier — needs larger hands and more air. Children under 12: better with alto. Teens/adults: can go straight to tenor.

Otto Link — why legendary?

Otto Link Super Tone Master (STM) = THE jazz tenor mouthpiece since the 1930s! Warm, "velvety," "classic jazz" tone. Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, Coltrane (early) = Otto Link. Tip opening 6*/7* = standard. Modern alternative: Jody Jazz DV.

Brass or bronze?

Yellow brass: brighter, "classic" tone. Standard. Bronze: warmer, "darker," deeper. Yanagisawa TWO2. Silver-plated: brighter, powerful. Classical. Unlacquered: more open, "raw," "vintage." Jazz.

Selmer or Yamaha?

Selmer SA80 II: "THE" tenor, French tone, $7000+. Legend. Yamaha 82Z: great jazz tenor, $4500, more reliable. Yanagisawa TWO1: Japanese premium, $5000, serious alternative. All three = excellent!

Why is tenor more expensive than alto?

Bigger instrument = more material, more keys, more complex assembly. Usually $200–500 more for the same range.

Which strap to choose?

Neck strap: standard but can hurt your neck during long sessions. Shoulder harness ⭐: distributes weight to shoulders and back. BG Comfort Harness ⭐ (~$40) or Neotech Super Harness (~$35). For tenor, harness = recommended!
