🇫🇷 About Vandoren: Three Generations of Craftsmanship

The Vandoren story begins in 1905 in Paris, when Paris Opera clarinettist Eugène Van Doren began making reeds for colleagues who admired their quality.

🎵 First Generation: Eugène (1905)

Eugène Van Doren — soloist with the Concerts Colonne orchestra and clarinettist at the Paris Opera. His reeds were renowned for their flawless sound. Fellow musicians convinced him to start selling. Thus was born a brand that would define the reed-quality standard for the next century.

🌟 Second Generation: Robert (1935)

Eugène's son, Robert Van Doren, graduated from the Paris Conservatoire and toured the US in 1928, where American musicians first discovered Vandoren reeds. In 1935 he acquired premises at 56 rue Lepic and created the legendary 5RV mouthpiece — still one of the world's most popular.

🔬 Third Generation: Bernard (1967)

Bernard Van Doren brought his grandfather's mechanical genius into modern manufacturing. He created the B45 mouthpiece and developed precision machinery with tolerances under one hundredth of a millimetre, increasing output tenfold. In 1990, the factory moved to Bormes les Mimosas in southern France, near the cane fields.

🎶 Vandoren Clarinet Reeds

Vandoren sets the global standard for clarinet reeds. The choice of professionals, teachers and students worldwide. From French to German and Austrian systems.

🔵 Traditional (Blue Box)

The world's most popular reed. Thin tip (.09 mm), strong heart, extremely pure sound. Strengths 1.5 to 5. Suitable for any style — classical to jazz. The benchmark against which all other reeds are measured.

🟣 V.12

Made from thicker cane. Tip .10 mm, heel 3.15 mm (hence the name — 12/100 of an inch). Darker, warmer tone with more body. Strengths 2.5–5. Numbering differs from Traditional: V.12 strength 4 ≈ Traditional 3.5.

⬛ 56 rue Lepic

Named after Vandoren's Paris headquarters. The thickest cane in the range: tip .11 mm, heel 3.25 mm. Similar to German-style reeds. Powerful, rich sound with maximum body.

🌟 V21

Released in 2015. Combines the 56 rue Lepic shape with a V.12 profile. Warm, centred sound with excellent projection. Precise articulation and ease in wide interval leaps. For any mouthpiece and style.

🎷 Vandoren Saxophone Reeds

From classical to jazz, funk and modern styles — Vandoren offers a reed for every saxophonist.

🔵 Traditional (Blue Box)

Classic reed with a thin tip and strong heart. Extremely pure sound. Although considered "classical", it is used by musicians in all styles. Strengths 1.5–5. A universal choice.

🟢 JAVA (Green)

Jazz reed, unfiled. Flexible, bright tone with fast response. For jazz, funk, pop. JAVA Red — filed version: more flexible, with a slightly stronger tonal body. Two versions for different preferences.

🟡 V16

Launched in 1993 at the request of American jazz musicians. Thicker tip, longer pallet than JAVA. More brilliant, percussive sound. Ideal for modern jazz, funk, R&B and contemporary styles.

🎵 ZZ / V21 / V.12

ZZ: instant response, extraordinary colour and brightness. For jazz. V21: the first conical saxophone reed — warm, centred sound. Unfiled. V.12: precise attack, homogeneous timbre, warm velvety sound. For classical and crossover.

🎶 Vandoren Clarinet Mouthpieces

Vandoren has defined the ideal clarinet sound since 1935. Made from ebonite (vulcanised rubber) with tolerances under 0.01 mm.

🌟 5RV / 5RV Lyre

Created by Robert Van Doren in 1935 — the world's most legendary clarinet mouthpiece. Pure, balanced tone. 5RV Lyre has a slightly longer facing for greater flexibility. Available in Traditional and Profile 88 beak.

🎵 B45 / B45•

Created by Bernard Van Doren in 1967. Became as iconic as the 5RV. Slightly more open with a more powerful sound. B45• has a slightly different facing. The choice of thousands of professionals and students.

🔬 M13 / M15 / M30 / BD5

🏆 Profile / Masters

Profile: round sound, great projection, immediate response. Combination of the best attributes of famous mouthpieces. Masters: flagship with titanium tuning rings for precise intonation.

🔗 Vandoren Ligatures

🧹 Swabs & Care

Cleaning swabs for clarinet and saxophone. Cork grease for airtight joint connections. Mouthpiece cushions for comfort and tooth protection. Reed trimmers and resurfacers for reed adjustment.

🎒 Straps & Harnesses

Neck straps and harnesses for saxophone. Even weight distribution for comfortable extended playing.

🌿 Vandoren Cane: From Field to Reed

🌱 Arundo donax

Cane is grown on Vandoren's own plantations in southern France, in Provence. Mediterranean climate — ideal growing conditions. Each stem matures for 2–3 years before harvest. The Provençal sun, wind and soil give the cane its unique acoustic properties.

♻️ Sustainability

Vandoren fully recycles production waste: as compost for the fields or as fuel for the boiler that heats the Bormes les Mimosas factory. A closed-loop production cycle with minimal environmental footprint.

🔬 Vandoren Technology

⚙️ Precision Manufacturing

Tolerances under 0.01 mm (one hundredth of a millimetre). Every mouthpiece is turned from ebonite with surgical precision. Machinery developed by Bernard Van Doren increased output tenfold while maintaining consistency.

🔬 High Density Ebonite

The result of years of R&D — higher-density ebonite for Black Diamond mouthpieces and new models. Improved resonance, clarity and projection versus standard ebonite.

🎵 Flow-Pack

Every reed in individual hermetic Flow-Pack packaging — protection from moisture and damage. The reed stays in optimal condition until first use.

🧪 VK Synthetic Reeds

🔵 VK1 Traditional

Synthetic Traditional-type reed. Stable response regardless of climate and humidity. No soaking required. Long lifespan. Ideal for practice, marching bands and outdoor performances.

🟡 VK7 Jazz

Synthetic jazz saxophone reed. The flexibility and brightness of Vandoren's jazz reeds in a synthetic format. For musicians who need consistency without sacrificing tone and response.
