Founder & Heritage
Hans-Peter Wilfer is the son of Fred Wilfer, founder of the legendary Framus brand. In 1982 he established Warwick with a clear vision: bass guitars built from exotic African tonewoods combined with German manufacturing precision, producing a tonal language that no Fender, Gibson or Rickenbacker could replicate. In 1985, Jack Bruce — the bassist who had defined rock bass playing with Cream — discovered the Thumb Bass. His endorsement proved that a small German workshop could compete on the world stage.
1995: Markneukirchen
In 1995 Warwick relocated to Markneukirchen in the Saxon Vogtland — a town with centuries of instrument-making tradition. This is where the main factory, Custom Shop and R&D centre are based. Warwick also owns the Framus trademark and is the owner of Sadowsky Guitars.
The Sound of Wood Philosophy
Unlike competitors, Warwick manufactured everything in-house: sourcing raw timber, naturally air-drying it, and producing necks, fingerboards, bodies and even MEC pickups on site. This end-to-end approach defined the unique Warwick tonal character — warm, full-bodied, with the distinctive growl that has made the brand famous worldwide.
Today
Warwick produces instruments across three tiers: RockBass (China, set up in Germany), German Pro Series Teambuilt (Markneukirchen) and Masterbuilt Custom Shop (Markneukirchen). Exotic Tonewoods
Wenge, bubinga, ovangkol, Tigerstripe Ebony, swamp ash, bubinga pommele, zebrano — Warwick was the first manufacturer to systematically use African exotic tonewoods in production instruments. Every piece of tonewood is naturally air-dried for maximum stability and resonance.
Just-A-Nut III (Brass)
On German-made models, the Just-A-Nut III is machined from brass (rather than Tedur as on RockBass) — for superior tonal transfer and density. Each string height is set with a 1.5 mm Allen key. Standard on Warwick instruments from 2007–2008.
Warwick 3D Bridge (Brass)
