🔌 What Is an Adapter Cable

📐 Design

Different connectors on each end. Balanced or unbalanced. 0.3–3 m. One cable instead of adapter + cable.

🎯 Why

Mic XLR → input TRS/3.5 mm. Lav mini-XLR → mixer XLR. One mic → two inputs (Y). More compact, more reliable.

⚠️ Note

Balanced (XLR→TRS) — keeps noise rejection. Unbalanced (XLR→TS/RCA) — loses it. For mics — balanced always.

🔷 XLR→TRS 6.3 mm

Most popular.

📐 XLR M→TRS M

Mic → TRS combo input on interface/mixer. Balanced. 0.5–3 m.

📐 XLR F→TRS M

Mixer XLR out → TRS input. For patchbay, monitoring.

🎯 When

Combo input occupied. Mixer without XLR. TRS patchbay. Studio, installations.

🔷 XLR→3.5 mm

📐 XLR M→3.5 TRS

Mic → camera/recorder. Level is weak — camera may not amplify enough. Condensers need phantom.

📐 XLR M→3.5 TRRS

Mic → smartphone. CTIA wiring. Dynamic only. Condensers need phantom.

⚠️ Limits

XLR level too low for 3.5 input. Solution: preamp or active adapter. Or recorder with XLR.

📡 Bodypack Cables

📐 Connectors

Shure TA4F, Sennheiser 3.5 lock, AKG mini-XLR, Audio-Technica cH, Sony 3.5, Lectrosonics TA5F. NOT interchangeable. Specify model.

📐 Design

Thin 1–2 mm, 1–1.5 m. Brand-specific → lav or universal 3.5/mini-XLR.

🎯 When

Lav from one brand → bodypack from another. Cable replacement. Check pin-out.

🔀 Y-Cables

📐 XLR Y-Cable

1× XLR F → 2× XLR M. One mic → two inputs. Passive. Studio (mixer + recorder).

📐 XLR→2× TRS

Mono → two channels of stereo input. Less common.

⚠️ Y vs Splitter

Y — passive, no isolation. Transformer splitter — isolated. Stage — splitter. Studio — Y is fine.

🔧 Other Types

🔷 Mini-XLR→XLR

For headsets, lavs with mini-XLR. Check pin count (3/4).

🔷 XLR→RCA

For consumer gear. Unbalanced. Specific situations.

🔷 XLR→USB

Built-in ADC. Mini-interface in a cable. Podcasts, Zoom. Some with phantom.

⚡ Balanced vs Unbalanced

🔷 Balanced

XLR→TRS. Two conductors + shield. Protection to 100+ m. For mics — always.

🔷 Unbalanced

XLR→TS, XLR→RCA. One conductor. Noise at 3+ m. Avoid for mics.

🎯 Rule

Mic → always balanced. Unbalanced only without alternative. DI box for conversion.

🎯 How to Choose

🎙️ Mic→Interface TRS

XLR M→TRS 6.3. Balanced. 0.5–2 m. If XLR input available — standard XLR is better.

🎬 Mic→Camera

XLR M→3.5 TRS (dynamic). Condenser — active adapter with phantom. Or recorder.

📱 Mic→Smartphone

XLR→3.5 TRRS (dynamic only). Condenser — XLR interface Lightning/USB-C. Or wireless.

📡 Lav→Other Bodypack

Brand-specific adapter cable. Model required. Check pin-out. Original is best.

🔀 1 Mic→2 Inputs

Y-cable (studio) or transformer splitter (stage).

🔧 Mini-XLR→XLR

For headsets/lavs. Check pin count (3/4) and wiring.

💻 XLR→Computer

XLR→USB with built-in ADC. Budget. Some with phantom. Quality below a separate interface.

🏠 Basic Set

1× XLR M→TRS (0.5 m) + 1× XLR M→3.5 TRS (1 m). Covers 90%. Stage — add Y-cable + gender changer.

❓ FAQ

What is it?

Cable with different connectors. XLR→TRS, XLR→3.5, mini-XLR→XLR. More reliable than adapter+cable.

XLR→TRS balanced?

Yes. TRS (3 contacts) = balanced. TS (2) = unbalanced. For mics — TRS.

For bodypack?

Brand-specific: Shure TA4F, Sennheiser lock, AKG mini-XLR. NOT interchangeable.

XLR→3.5 for camera?

Dynamic — yes. Condenser — active with phantom. Recorder is better.

Y or splitter?

Y — simple, no isolation. Splitter — isolated. Stage — splitter.
