⚡ What Is 48V

🔊 How

+48V DC on XLR pins 2 and 3 vs ground. Powers condenser mic electronics: capsule, preamp. Without 48V condensers don't work. Standard IEC 61938.

🎤 Who Needs It

Condensers: LDC, SDC, boundary, gooseneck, hanging. Don't need it: dynamics, ribbons. Exception: active ribbons (AEA N22).

📊 Built-In vs External

Most mixers/interfaces have a "48V" button. External adapter — when there's no built-in, for cameras/recorders, or inline boost.

🔧 Why an Adapter

⚠️ No 48V

Budget mixers, portable recorders (plug-in 5V ≠ 48V), cameras (3.5 mm, no XLR).

🔌 Shared Phantom

One switch for all channels. Need 48V on ch 1 (condenser) but not ch 2 (ribbon). External = independent.

🚀 Inline Boost

Cloudlifter, FetHead — use 48V from mixer for +25–28 dB boost of quiet dynamics (SM7B, RE20). Don't pass 48V to mic.

1️⃣ Single-Channel

📐 Art Phantom II

Standard: 1× XLR in/out, 48V, mains, LED. Reliable, affordable.

📐 Behringer PS400

Ultra-budget: 2× XLR, 48V, mains. For a stereo condenser pair.

📐 Others

Mackie MDB-1P. Radial Power Pre. Millenium PP2B (battery). t.bone SC 140.

8️⃣ Multi-Channel

📐 Art S8

8× phantom 48V, 1U rack. Studio/live. Per-channel LED.

📐 Behringer ADA8200

8× preamp + 48V + ADAT. Interface expansion.

📐 Where

Drum OH. Orchestra. Conference. Installation.

🔋 Battery

📐 How

9V/AA → 48V. Portable. Video, reporting, field. 6–50 h.

🎯 Models

Millenium PP2B (9V, budget). Art Phantom II PRO (mains/battery). Rode VXLR Pro (3.5 mm→XLR+48V). Deity S-Phantom.

💡 Tips

Check voltage (some output 12V not 48V). Spare battery. LED charge indicator.

🚀 Inline Boost

📐 How

Uses 48V from mixer for +25–28 dB boost of dynamic mic. Does NOT pass 48V to mic. For SM7B, RE20, Procaster.

🎯 Models

Cloud CL-1 (+25 dB). CL-2 (2 ch). Triton FetHead (+27 dB). sE DM1 (+28 dB). Rode Inline Activator (+28 dB).

💡 When

SM7B + Scarlett = not enough gain → noise. + CL-1 = +25 dB → enough. Podcasts, voice-over, broadcasting.

📹 For Cameras

📐 Problem

DSLR: 3.5 mm, no XLR, no 48V. Recorders: plug-in 3–5V ≠ 48V.

🎯 Solution

Rode VXLR Pro (XLR→3.5 mm + battery 48V). Deity S-Phantom. Saramonic SmartRig+.

💡 Alternative

Recorder with 48V (Zoom F3, Tascam DR-40X) → record separately → sync in post. Best quality.

⚠️ Safety

🔌 Order

Connect mic → enable 48V → gain. Disconnect: gain 0 → disable 48V → 10 s → unplug XLR.

🎤 Dynamics

SM58, e835 — NOT damaged (balanced XLR). Faulty cable → risk.

⚠️ Ribbons

Passive (R-121, R84) — CAN be damaged! Always disable 48V. Active (N22, R-122) — need 48V.

🔌 Connection

🔌 Mains

Mic → phantom adapter → mixer (48V OFF on mixer). Adapter powered from mains.

🔋 Battery

Mic → battery phantom → recorder/camera. Or + XLR→3.5 mm → camera.

🚀 Cloudlifter

Dynamic mic → CL-1 → mixer (48V ON). CL-1 draws 48V, boosts signal. Mic does NOT receive 48V.

🎧 Podcast

Interface has 48V? No adapter needed. SM7B? CL-1/FetHead.

💰 Budget

PS400 — min mains. PP2B — min battery. FetHead — min boost.

❓ FAQ

What is 48V?

Voltage over XLR for condensers. Without it they don't work. Dynamics don't need it.

Why adapter?

Mixer without 48V. Camera. Recorder. Inline boost.

Cloudlifter?

Uses 48V for +25 dB dynamic boost. Doesn't pass 48V to mic. SM7B.

48V + dynamic?

OK. Ribbons — CAREFUL. Connect → then enable.

Battery?

Field/camera. 9V/AA. 6–50 h. PP2B, VXLR Pro.

Channels?

1 mic → single. Several → Art S8 or mixer with 48V.
