Clarinet and mouthpiece compatibility
A “B♭/A” label does not guarantee universal fit. Check the clarinet maker and model, Boehm or German/Oehler system, socket diameter and depth, bore profile and mouthpiece tenon. Selmer Paris, Yamaha CSG and some German-system instruments often require dedicated fits.
Make and model
Provide the exact instrument model, not only its key.
System
Boehm, German/Oehler and Austrian systems use different standards and acoustic geometry.

Barrel length and playing pitch
Lengths around 62–68 mm are common for B♭ and A clarinets, but they are not a universal standard. Start with the original barrel length and measure the warmed-up instrument at its normal playing temperature. Even 0.5–1 mm can be perceptible.
Playing flat
Start by comparing a shorter option and check that the joints are not pulled out too far.
Playing sharp
A longer barrel may help overall pitch but will not fix one isolated unstable note.

The key acoustic difference
Cylindrical, tapered and reverse-taper bores
The internal bore matters more than the outside shape. Cylindrical, tapered and reverse-taper profiles interact differently with the mouthpiece and upper joint. They can change twelfth balance, resistance and register evenness; there is no universally best geometry.
Straight / cylindrical
A familiar baseline response, with results still dependent on diameter and transitions.
Tapered
A gradual diameter change may adjust resistance and intonation tendencies.
Reverse taper
Often chosen for focus and stability, but it must be tested with the particular setup.

Clarinet barrel materials
Grenadilla, cocobolo and other woods are valued for their acoustic and tactile properties. Composite, hard rubber, Delrin, ABS or synthetic liners tolerate humidity and temperature changes well. Metal or carbon rings reinforce the ends; assess any tonal effect as part of the complete design.
Grenadilla / mpingo
Traditional dense material for professional clarinets; it needs appropriate storage.
Cocobolo and other woods
Different density and feel are possible; bore accuracy and workmanship remain critical.
Composite and synthetic
