What The Moderate Medium Tension Buys You

On paper the gap to the Soloist version is small; under the hands it is decisive: A 5.23 against 5.97, D 4.74 against 5.1, G 4.66 against 4.9 kg. Less tension means less load on the bridge and more freedom for the top plate, which is why Larsen says Medium "often opens up the instrument sound" — the body works instead of fighting the pull. The bow meets less resistance too: at pianissimo the string speaks earlier, and long phrases no longer demand constant control of right-hand weight. A, D and G all sit on the same synthetic multi-filament core — the metal on top is what separates the voices. The second option is the 0.28 mm E, Larsen's strongest E at 9.00 / 19.80: the maker says it "enhances the whole instrument's sound, making it more dense and increasing focus".
