Set of strings Thomastik Vision (medium) 4/4 for violin
Vision is the core professional line from the Viennese maker Thomastik-Infeld, and the company sums up its own sound in four words: "focussed, clear, open and brilliant". The VI100 set is the configuration most players reach for: a synthetic core on A, D and G, with an E made of multilayered carbon steel wire with a tin-plated surface and a removable ball end. The tensions run 8.0 kp on the E, 5.5 kp on the aluminium-wound A, 4.5 and 4.7 kp on the silver-wound D and G — 22.7 kp (50.0 lb) in total over a 32.5 cm vibrating length. Mixing is explicitly sanctioned by the maker: "VISION strings can be mixed and matched with almost any synthetic core string", which makes the set a base rather than a closed package. Note the contents, too: the D here is VI03A, meaning silver, not aluminium, and it is that silver winding that gives the lower voices the density which keeps the set compact instead of boomy.

How the 22.7 kp Is Distributed
The E takes more than a third of the total tension — 8.0 kp against 5.5 kp on the A and under 5 kp on the D and G. A thin plain-steel monofilament needs that reserve so it does not collapse under bow pressure in the high positions, while the synthetic voices hold their shape at far lower tension. From there the drop is gradual and predictable — 5.5, then 4.5 and 4.7 kp — so crossing from string to string does not change what the left hand has to do: the same finger pressure gives the same pitch. The bow arm meets even resistance across all four, and in chords no single voice jumps forward.
Silver on D and G Instead of Aluminium
This is where orders go wrong: the letter A in the article number VI03A stands for silver (Ag), not aluminium. Silver is denser than aluminium and adds mass to the winding, so the D comes out warmer and darker than the aluminium version, while the G gains the support that keeps the bottom from breaking up at forte. If your instrument is already dark and you want a more open, transparent D, the aluminium VI03 is sold separately at exactly the same 4.5 kp, so the swap will not upset the balance of the set.
Removable Ball End on the E and Freedom to Configure
The ball on the VI01 E unscrews to reveal a loop end, so the string fits both a fine-tuner hook and a loop-end tailpiece without adapters. The other three voices are ball end. Combined with the maker's blessing to mix Vision "with almost any synthetic core string", that turns VI100 into a starting point rather than a fixed recipe: keep the silver lower voices and try a different E, swap the D for the aluminium version, or move up in gauge — the heavy VI100ST set totals 23.5 kp.

What's Included
The official package holds four strings — E VI01, A VI02, D VI03A and G VI04 — each with its own Thomastik article number. The set covers a complete restring, with nothing left to buy separately.
Who It's For
A set for the violinist who covers orchestra, chamber work and solo pieces on one instrument; for the teacher who needs professional quality in a fractional size rather than a student string; and for the player who builds a personal combination of voices and wants a reliable base that the maker officially allows you to mix with other synthetic core strings.
Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is in the VI100 set?
Four 4/4 strings in medium gauge: E VI01 in multilayered carbon steel with a tin-plated surface and removable ball end (8.0 kp), A VI02 with aluminium winding (5.5 kp), D VI03A with silver winding (4.5 kp) and G VI04 with silver winding (4.7 kp). Total 22.7 kp.
Is the D in this set silver or aluminium?
Silver — the set contains VI03A, where the letter A means silver rather than aluminium. An aluminium D does exist in the line as the separate article VI03 at the same 4.5 kp, so one can replace the other without rebalancing the remaining strings.
Is Vision available in a stiffer gauge?
Yes, the 4/4 size is made in heavy (stark) as well — the VI100ST set totals 23.5 kp: E VI01ST 8.3 kp, A VI02ST 5.6 kp, D VI03AST 4.8 kp and G VI04ST 4.8 kp. Heavy gauge is not made for fractional sizes.
Which sizes does the Vision line cover?
Officially 4/4, 3/4, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/10 and 1/16 — Vision remains one of the few professional lines available in fractional sizes. Total tensions of the medium sets: 4/4 — 22.7 kp, 3/4 — 20.4 kp, 1/2 — 18.4 kp, 1/4 — 17.5 kp, 1/8 — 16.8 kp, 1/10 — 16.1 kp, 1/16 — 15.4 kp.
Can Vision be mixed with other strings?
Yes, and it is the maker's own position: "VISION strings can be mixed and matched with almost any synthetic core string". In practice players most often change the E or fit the aluminium D VI03 in place of the silver VI03A.
Are these genuine Thomastik strings?
Yes. SoundsGood supplies only genuine Thomastik-Infeld product in official packaging marked with article numbers.
