The PRS Story: From an Annapolis Workshop to the World Stage

Paul Reed Smith started building guitars as a student, and in 1985 founded PRS Guitars in Maryland. The first big breakthrough came when the young luthier convinced Carlos Santana to try his instrument — the legendary guitarist has stayed with PRS ever since. The very first production model, the Custom 24, became the brand's calling card: 24 frets, the patented PRS tremolo bridge, bird-shaped inlays, and a hybrid of the best traits of the classic guitar-building schools.

PRS is famous for its obsession with detail: proprietary pickups (85/15, DGT, DS-01), the winged tuner buttons drawn from Smith's 1982 sketches, meticulous wood selection, and the TCI tuning technology. The McCarty series honors Ted McCarty — the legendary golden-era Gibson president who became Smith's mentor. And the Silver Sky, created with John Mayer, became one of the most successful signature models in modern history — 2026 brought the limited Wild Blue version, the first US-made PRS with a color-matched headstock.

The brand celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2025, and the 2026 lineup (NAMM 2026) added the semi-hollow DGT Semi-Hollow to the Core series, the offset S2 Vela HHT, the Archon Classic 50 Combo, the SE Chleo signature of DragonForce's Herman Li, and Ed Sheeran's baritone. The SE series received the proprietary Wing Button tuners and new pickup rings — even more PRS DNA in the accessible instruments.
