A String Pirastro Chromcor 4/4 for Violin
The Chromcor A string on its own: single filament steel core, chrome steel winding, 6.0 kp, mittel gauge, 4/4 size, ball end, article 319220. In the set it is the second highest tension after the E, and it takes more left-hand work than any other string in first position. The winding is not aluminium, as in many student sets, but chrome steel: a harder metal that does not flatten under the finger and does not build up oxide. Pirastro describes the series as clear and very brilliant with a big tonal volume — nowhere is that more audible than on the A.

6.0 kp: A Middle That Does Not Sag
The A holds 6.0 kp, sitting exactly between the tight 7.8 kp E and the lower strings at 4.9 and 4.8 kp. In playing terms that is an even step between the first two strings: the hand does not rebalance its pressure when a melody crosses the E–A boundary. On an inexpensive instrument this is the clearest benefit of an even set — double stops on those two strings do not drift apart in volume.
Chrome Winding Against Perspiration
The A spends most of its life under the first and second fingers, which is why it goes dull first in any set — a soft metal flattens and clogs. Chromcor answers that with material: in Pirastro's words, chrome steel cannot corrode and is not affected by hand perspiration. The winding stays smooth, the finger meets no roughness, and the overtones do not vanish after a month of daily practice.
Volume Where The Instrument Has None
Pirastro claims a big tonal volume and a very easy response for Chromcor, and on the A that reads as help for a cheap violin. The steel core gets moving under minimal bow pressure, so the middle register sounds full even when the body itself is quiet. For a pupil playing in class and in ensemble, that is the difference between being heard and not.
