Article 10 is the second string of the Superflexible line: a steel rope core under a chrome winding, tension 6.5 kp (14.3 lb), medium gauge, 4/4 size, brass crimp ball end. This A is the only string in the line that ships in both full-size sets, 15 and 15A, which makes it the series' baseline middle voice. Of the construction Thomastik writes that the rope core "reduces stiffness and improves elasticity", and that the line as a whole offers "excellent purity of open fifths". For the A specifically the practical point is different: this is the string the fingers work hardest, and here chrome earns its place as wear protection.

A Transparent Middle Without Sludge
The A carries the register most violin writing actually lives in, and any surplus winding mass immediately makes that middle thick and slow. Chrome sits on the rope core as a thin hard layer, so the string does not smear its overtones: a chord reads out as separate voices instead of one blur. The elasticity of the multi-strand core adds an easy response — the A speaks under minimal bow pressure, so it does not vanish in pianissimo.
Chrome Where the String Wears Fastest

The Standard A in Both Sets of the Line
Sets 15 and 15A both use exactly this string — 6.5 kp, chrome. Replacing a single worn A therefore does not tilt the balance: the load on the bridge stays as it was, and the fifths with E and D settle just as they did on a fresh set. Thomastik's catalogue also listed an aluminum-wound A — article 11, at an identical 6.5 kp — but it never shipped in the sets and is no longer published on the 2026 site. The chrome version is the one factory-fitted in the sets.
