E String Thomastik Alphayue 4/4 for Violin
The E is the one string in the Alphayue set that is not built on synthetics: this is carbon steel with a tin-plated surface. That is not a cost decision — up top the string works at the highest tension in the set, and steel is what holds a precise attack, refuses to drift under the finger and carries the brilliance that lets the E cut through an orchestral texture. Tension is 7.9 kp (17.4 lb), the highest of the four. The end is a removable ball, so the string fits a plain tailpiece and a loop-type fine tuner equally well. There is one gauge, medium, so nothing to choose.

Steel Where Synthetics Lose the Attack
On the E the bow works closest to the bridge and hardest, so the voice needs a stiff foundation. Carbon steel gives the sound back immediately: the note starts clean with no run-up, and staccato or fast passages in third to fifth position do not smear. That predictability is what lets a learner hear the result of the stroke instead of fighting the string.
Tin Plating Against the Classic Steel-E Problem
Bare steel oxidises from finger sweat and turns shrill within a couple of weeks — the E goes glassy and starts to whistle. Tin plating pushes that point back: Thomastik states corrosion resistance and an exceptionally long life-span for Alphayue, and nowhere is it more noticeable than on the E. In practice the string stays bright rather than piercing.
Removable Ball: One String for Any Tailpiece
The ball on the AL01 can be taken off to fit a loop-type fine tuner, or left in place for a plain tailpiece. That removes the usual headache when buying a single E — no need to work out which end type your violin needs. One string covers both cases.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are this string's specifications?
Alphayue 4/4 E, article AL01: carbon steel core, tin-plated surface, removable ball end, tension 7.9 kp (17.4 lb), medium gauge, 32.5 cm vibrating length.
Is the ball removable or fixed?
Removable. Leave it on for a plain tailpiece, or take it off if your fine tuner takes a loop — the string is built for both.
Is this the same E that comes in the AL100 set?
Yes, AL01 is the standard E of the AL100 set. In the set it works alongside the A (AL02), D (AL03) and G (AL04), and the four strings together come to 22.4 kp.
Why is the E steel rather than synthetic like the other strings?
Because on the E the sound is built on stiffness: in the top register a synthetic fibre delivers neither that attack nor that pitch stability. Across the whole Alphayue range the E is tin-plated carbon steel, while the synthetic core sits on the A, D and G.
Will AL01 fit a child's violin or a set from another Thomastik range?
Fractional sizes have their own AL01 articles at different tensions — on 1/2 size, for instance, it is 6.2 kp; the 4/4 string will not work correctly on a short scale. As for mixing with other Thomastik ranges, the maker publishes no official recommendations: AL01 is designed for the AL100 set.
Are these genuine Thomastik strings?
Yes. SoundsGood supplies only genuine Thomastik-Infeld product in official packaging marked with article numbers.
