E String Thomastik Spirocore 4/4 for Violin
This is the top voice of the Spirocore line — article S9 — and its defining feature is that it is not a bare steel wire. Inside runs a spiral steel rope core (Spiral core in Thomastik's own documentation) and over it sits an aluminum winding that changes both the feel under the fingertip and the shape of the attack. Tension is 7.5 kp (16.53 lb) in medium gauge, size 4/4, finished with a brass crimp ball. It is the same E that ships inside set S15, so it works equally well as a replacement for a worn top string or as a standalone purchase. The tone comes out bright and precise, without the metallic harshness of plain steel.

🏆 SoundsGood — genuine Thomastik-Infeld strings only, made in Vienna.
An Attack That Never Lags
The E carries the intelligibility of the whole upper register: if the string answers late, the first notes of a fast figure smear even with a flawless left hand. A spiral rope core has less inertia than solid wire, so sound appears virtually the moment the hair meets the string. You hear it most in detache and martele — every note starts with a defined edge rather than a soft swell, and the passage stays readable down to the last sixteenth.
Aluminum Winding Against Whistling
A bare steel E has a well-known vice: under heavy pressure, or when the bow is not quite perpendicular, it slips into a whistle. The aluminum winding gives the bow hair more grip and takes a little edge off the upper partials, so the string stays controllable even at forte in high positions. It also feels like a real surface under the fingertip rather than a thin wire, so the pad does not slide during vibrato. If you want the sharpest, most cutting top instead, the line offers a chrome-wound counterpart at identical tension — article S8.
7.5 kp and a Brass Ball
In set S15 this is the tightest of the four strings — 7.5 kp of the 23.1 kp total — and that reserve is what keeps the top focused under pressure. The end is a brass crimp ball: it is not removable, so the string goes into the tailpiece as it is, and in Spirocore the brass colour belongs to E and A, which makes it easy to tell strings apart in the envelope and to spot the genuine article. Steel gives long service: sweat and humidity swings do not bother it, so you replace this string when it is worn, not when the weather turns.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which article is this string and how is it wound?
It is article S9 — a Spirocore E on a spiral steel rope core with an aluminum winding, medium gauge, size 4/4, tension 7.5 kp (16.53 lb).
How does the S9 E differ from the S8 E?
Only in winding material: S9 is aluminum, S8 is chrome. Core, gauge and tension are the same at 7.5 kp, so the choice is about the character of the top string, not about load on the instrument.
Does this E have a removable ball or a loop?
A brass crimp ball end. It is not designed to be removed, and Thomastik does not offer a loop-end version of this string.
Can I fit this E to strings from another line?
Mechanically yes: it is a standard 4/4 medium E at 7.5 kp and fits any ball-end tailpiece. Thomastik gives no official mixing recommendations on the Spirocore page, so compare it with the tension of the E in your current set.
What is the diameter of this string?
Thomastik publishes no diameters for Spirocore violin strings, neither on the line page nor in the factory shop. The confirmed figures are medium gauge and 7.5 kp of tension.
Are these genuine Thomastik strings?
Yes. SoundsGood supplies only genuine Thomastik-Infeld product in official packaging marked with article numbers.
