A Wound E Instead of Bare Wire
A bare steel E is thin smooth wire: the finger slides on it, vibrato in third or fourth position comes out uneven, and the bow hair grips it less securely than the other three strings. A chrome winding removes both problems at once — the fingertip meets a real surface with grip, and the bow gets steadier contact. Chrome is also a hard metal, so the winding survives the spots where a finger lands every day instead of wearing through to the core in a couple of weeks.
7.8 kp Makes It the Tightest String in the Set, by Design
The E carries the highest tension of the four strings in the line, for a purely practical reason: in high positions the working length is short while bow pressure stays the same, and without a margin of tension the top collapses into a hiss. At the same time a multi-strand cable bends more easily than solid wire of the same section, so the string never feels wiry: it seats evenly in the nut and bridge grooves and does not kink where it turns at the tailpiece.
A Clean Open Fifth With the A
Thomastik claims "excellent purity of open fifths" for the line, and the E–A pair is where you hear it best. Chrome E 8 and chrome A 10 share the same core construction and the same winding type, so the fifth settles without a compromise between the lower and the upper voice. If you replace only the first string of a set 15A, you get back exactly the fifth the set had when new. The brass ball also belongs to E and A throughout the line, so envelopes are hard to mix up.
