Seven microphones for a drum kit
The Superlux DRKA5C2 is a microphone set for live drums and rehearsal-room recording. It contains one PRA218A for kick, four PRA228A microphones for toms and snare, and two PRA268AH microphones for cymbals and overhead use. This layout gives you individual control over key drums alongside a broader picture of the performance.
Dynamic and condenser capsules
The PRA218A and PRA228A are supercardioid dynamic microphones tailored to low and low-mid sources. The two PRA268AH microphones use supercardioid electret condenser capsules. Position them above the kit to capture cymbals and the overall performance. When choosing positions, listen to direct sound and spill from adjacent drums while leaving enough space for the drummer’s sticks.
Inputs, power and channel balance
Connect each microphone to its own microphone input. Using the complete set simultaneously requires seven mixer or audio-interface channels. The condenser PRA268AH microphones need phantom power and can operate with 48 V. The dynamic capsules need no separate power. Set up each drum individually, then add the overheads and check the combined sound, balance and phase relationship.
Mounting and transport
Swivel holders let you mount the microphones on compatible stands and adjust their angle towards the drumhead or chosen part of the kit. A plastic carrying case keeps the seven microphones together between rehearsals. Select cables, stands and drum-rim clamps separately. Before playing, check every mounting point and route cables clear of pedals and the performer’s feet.
