An instrument microphone with a flat profile
Superlux PRA628 MKII is a dynamic instrument microphone designed for guitar cabinets, bass amplifiers and other instruments. Its flat head also suits drum applications, particularly toms, where the capsule needs to sit close to the source. The sturdy metal body can be secured in an appropriate holder for recording sessions or live performances.
Pickup pattern and frequency range
The supercardioid pattern helps emphasise the intended instrument while reducing surrounding sound. The specified frequency range is 80–18,000 Hz. Close placement introduces proximity effect: moving nearer strengthens the low-frequency response. Adjusting the working distance therefore provides a way to shape the bass balance before signal processing. Listen to the final position together with any other microphones in use.
Position the FRONT side towards the source
PRA628 MKII is a side-address microphone: aim the broad face marked FRONT at the sound source. At a guitar speaker, start in front of the cone and adjust distance and position relative to its centre while listening. For a tom, aim this working face towards the drumhead. Secure the position and allow space for the performer and nearby instruments.
Connection and supplied accessories
A male three-pin XLR connector connects to a microphone input using an appropriate cable. The package includes a microphone clip, a gooseneck clamp and a pouch for mounting and storage. A separate microphone stand is an optional accessory. Before use, check the mounting, cable routing and input level on the mixer or recording system.
