Close placement beside an instrument
The Superlux PRA638 is a condenser microphone for reinforcing and recording acoustic instruments, brass, strings and piano. Its flat grille and slim body let you place the capsule close to the chosen part of the sound source. This shape also suits guitar cabinets where space is limited. The FRONT marking identifies the working side of the grille.
Cardioid capsule and sound
A 16 mm electret condenser capsule provides cardioid pickup and a 50 Hz–20 kHz frequency response. Directional pickup helps separate the instrument from nearby sources, although placement remains important. Try different angles and distances, listening for changes in attack, low-frequency weight and brightness before securing the microphone in its final position.
Connection and phantom power
The three-pin XLR output connects to a microphone input on a mixer or audio interface. Phantom power is required, and the PRA638 can operate from a 48 V source. Lower the channel level before connecting, then set input gain while the musician plays at performance volume. Leave headroom for stronger accents.
Mounting and supplied accessories
The package contains one PRA638, a microphone holder, an HM12DA gooseneck clamp and a pouch. The clamp supports placement while the flexible neck lets you refine the grille angle. A metal body suits regular use. Select a microphone cable and phantom power source separately. Check that the clamp is secure and the cable has enough slack.
