Boston Sax Shop Black Label Alto Saxophone Reeds #4.5 (1 reed)
The Boston Sax Shop Black Label reeds are the original legendary custom reeds for alto saxophone, featuring a hybrid cut between jazz and classical. Designed by Jack Tyler (Owner/Product Designer at BSS) in collaboration with the finest French cane manufacturer to solve a longstanding challenge: jazz-cut reeds offer projection but play too bright and buzzy, while classical reeds have depth and warmth but struggle to cut across a band. Black Label bridges both: a warm, dark tone that can still be pushed. Made in France with EU Certified Organic Cane. Strength: #4.5. Sold in boxes of 1 reed.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is a hybrid cut reed?
A hybrid cut combines the characteristics of jazz and classical reed cuts. Jazz reeds project well but can sound bright and buzzy. Classical reeds have warmth and depth but may not cut through an ensemble. The Black Label hybrid cut delivers a warm, dark tone that still projects — offering the best of both worlds.
Which strength is right for me?
Strength #4.5 is a softer reed, well suited to beginners and players who prefer a lighter resistance. More experienced players typically move towards 2.5 or 3. The right strength depends on your mouthpiece setup and personal preference. When in doubt, start with #4.5 or #2.5.
How does the Black Label differ from other BSS reeds?
The Black Label is the original and flagship series of Boston Sax Shop — the reed that started the company. It features the founder's own hybrid cut design. Other BSS series have different cut profiles and tonal characteristics.
Are Black Label reeds suitable for classical playing?
The Black Label is primarily a jazz reed with a hybrid cut. Its warm, dark tone may appeal to classical players, but for strictly academic playing, a more traditional classical-cut reed may be a better fit.
