⚠️Smaller than Bb!
Dedicated size

⚠️ Eb Reeds ≠ Bb Reeds

📐 Different size!

Eb clarinet reeds are SMALLER than Bb/A. Shorter and narrower. NOT compatible! A Bb reed won't fit an Eb mouthpiece. Always check the box: "Eb Clarinet," "Petite Clarinette," "Piccolo Clarinet."

📐 Smaller selection

Fewer options than Bb. Eb is a specialist instrument with lower demand. But main Vandoren and D'Addario lines are available for Eb.

📐 Playing characteristics

Eb = small, sensitive. Less air than Bb. Brighter, more piercing tone. Intonation is tricky! The reed affects Eb intonation even more than Bb. The right reed = critical.

🇫🇷 Vandoren for Eb

📐 Traditional Eb ⭐

The #1 standard! Classic cut. Bright, clear tone. Strength 1.5–5. Box of 10 ~$22–30. Start here!

📐 V12 Eb ⭐

📐 V21 Eb

Traditional + V12 compromise. Balanced, flexible. Strength 2.5–5. Box ~$28–35.

📐 56 Rue Lepic Eb

🇺🇸 D'Addario for Eb

📐 Royal Eb ⭐

Improved Rico. Better tone. Good budget alternative to Traditional. Box ~$20–26.

📐 Reserve Eb ⭐

📐 Reserve Classic Eb

Top D'Addario! Thicker heel. Warm tone. Box ~$30–38. For professionals.

🌿 Others

📐 Gonzalez Eb

Argentinian! Regular Cut Eb, FOF Eb. Quality cane, affordable. Box ~$16–25. Check availability for Eb.

📐 Légère Eb (synthetic)

Plastic! No soaking. Lasts months. Stable for Eb where intonation is critical. ~$22–30 each. Great backup reed!

📏 Strength for Eb

📐 The Eb rule

Usually 0.5 softer than Bb! If you play Bb on 3, try Eb on 2.5–3. If Bb on 3.5, try Eb on 3–3.5. A guideline, not a rule — depends on mouthpiece and preference.

📐 Recommendations

Starting Eb: 2–2.5. Advanced: 2.5–3. Professional: 3–3.5. V12 Eb: usually 0.5 softer than Traditional (V12 Eb 2.5 ≈ Traditional Eb 3).

📐 Why not too stiff

Eb is bright by nature! Too stiff = even brighter, "harsher" + harder to control intonation. Softer = warmer, easier control. But too soft = "flappy." Balance!

🎯 How to Choose

🎵 Starting Eb

Vandoren Traditional Eb 2.5 ⭐. Or Royal Eb 2.5. If Bb on 3 → try Eb 2.5.

🎵 Orchestra

Vandoren V12 Eb 3 ⭐ — tames brightness. D'Addario Reserve Eb 3. V12 = orchestral Eb favourite.

🎵 Chamber

Vandoren 56 Rue Lepic Eb 3 — warmest. For blending with ensemble.

🎵 Backup / marching

Légère Eb ⭐ — lasts months, weatherproof. Or Rico Eb (cheap, expendable).

🎵 Budget

D'Addario Royal Eb (~$23 ⭐). Gonzalez Eb (~$20).

⚠️ Important

Check "Eb" on the box! Don't buy Bb for Eb. Soak before playing. Reed case: store separately from Bb. From 10, usually 6–8 are playable.

❓ FAQ

Can I use Bb reeds on Eb?

NO! Bb reeds are larger. Won't seat on an Eb mouthpiece. Always dedicated Eb reeds!

Why are V12 popular for Eb?

Eb is naturally bright. V12's thicker heel gives a warmer, "darker" tone — helps tame Eb brightness. In orchestra this is very valuable!

What strength if I play Bb on 3?

Try Eb 2.5–3. Traditional: Eb 2.5. V12: Eb 2.5 (V12 are stiffer). A guideline — adjust individually!

Why are Eb reeds more expensive?

Lower demand! Eb = specialist instrument. Less produced → higher unit price. Usually $2–5 more per box vs Bb.

How many Eb reeds do I need?

Eb is played less often than Bb. 1–2 boxes per year = enough for most. Keep 3–4 working reeds in rotation. Keep a Légère as backup!

Are there synthetic Eb reeds?

Yes! Légère Eb ⭐ — great option. Stable, lasts months. Especially useful for Eb — the instrument sits in its case between programmes; natural reeds can dry out. Légère = always ready.
