Traditional = brighter, easier, for learning. V12 = warmer, deeper, for orchestra. Bass clarinet needs deep tone → V12 = ideal! Most pros play V12.
Bass reeds = same as Bb?
NO! Different size! Bass clarinet reeds are much larger than Bb. NOT compatible. Box must say "Bass Clarinet" or "Clarinette Basse."
Strength = same as Bb?
Usually thinner than Bb! Bass mouthpiece is more open → lower strength. If Bb V12 3.5 → bass V12 3–3.5.
How long?
V12 lasts longer than Traditional (thicker heel = slower wear). 3–6 weeks with regular playing. Rotate 3–4!
V21 for bass?
Yes! Vandoren V21 for bass = balanced between Traditional and V12. Conical cut. If V12 too "dark" = try V21.
