🇺🇸 About Vater: From Jack's Drum Shop to a Global Brand
The Vater story begins in 1956 in Boston, when lathe operator Fred Maichle began hand-turning drumsticks for the legendary Jack's Drum Shop — a store founded by drummer Jack Adams. Customers included Philly Joe Jones, Louie Bellson and Buddy Rich.
🏆 From Workshop to Factory
In the 1970s, Adams' grandsons — Ron and Alan Vater — began producing sticks in larger volumes. In the 1980s, they manufactured for Vic Firth, Zildjian, Tama, Pearl and distributors worldwide. In 1988, they opened a new factory in Holbrook, Massachusetts, and in 1990 launched their own Vater brand.
🔬 Quality Philosophy
Every Vater stick undergoes: lathe-turning, tumble-finishing, hand-rolling for straightness, and computer analysis for weight and tone matching. Vater was among the first to introduce computer-matched pairing — a technology that later became an industry standard.
🌐 Today
Vater remains a family-owned business with 100% US manufacturing. Products include: sticks (hickory, maple), Nude, Eternal Black, Color Wrap, Extended Play series, signature models, brushes, Splashstick multi-rods, mallets and accessories. Artists include Chad Smith, Stewart Copeland, Mike Mangini, Josh Freese and Jay Weinberg.
🪵 American Hickory — The Core Range
Hickory is the most popular wood for drumsticks. Vater uses the two finest species: Shellbark and Shagbark Hickory. Dense, heavy, with excellent shock absorption — reduces hand and wrist fatigue.
🎵 Los Angeles 5A
Vater's most popular model. A versatile all-round stick for any style. Length 16", diameter .570". Acorn tip for warm, full cymbal tones. Available with wood or nylon tip. The benchmark for balance and response for every drummer.
💪 Power 5A / 5B
Power 5A: 1/2" longer than the standard 5A for extra reach and weight. 5B: .605" diameter, 16" length — for drummers needing extra power and projection. Acorn tip. Ideal for rock, metal and high-volume situations.
🎷 Manhattan 7A / Super Jazz
Manhattan 7A: longer than a standard 7A with a small round tip for defined cymbal work. Super Jazz: thinner profile for maximum sensitivity and control. Ideal for jazz, swing and acoustic settings.
🔥 Fatback 3A / Fusion / Gospel
Fatback 3A: thicker stick with a quick taper — powerful feel without excess weight. Fusion: between 5A and 5B in the grip. Gospel series: extended versions of popular models for greater reach and dynamic headroom.
🍁 Sugar Maple — Lightness & Warmth
Sugar Maple is a lighter wood that produces a warm, darker tone. Ideal for drummers wanting a thicker stick without the extra weight, or for quieter acoustic contexts.
🎵 Sugar Maple Characteristics
Lighter than hickory at the same diameter — less hand fatigue during long sessions. Warm, soft cymbal tone. Less projection compared with hickory — ideal for studio work and acoustic sets. Natural rebound for fast response.
📋 Available Models
Most popular Vater Hickory models are also available in Sugar Maple: 5A, 5B, 7A, Power 5A, Manhattan 7A, Fusion, Super Jazz and more. Same profiles, tips and dimensions — just in lighter wood for a different feel and tone.
🎨 Special Series
Beyond classic Hickory and Maple, Vater offers several unique series with different finishes, colours and functionality.
🤚 Nude Series
Sticks with no lacquer finish. The sanded natural wood surface provides a dry, confident grip with no slipping — even with sweaty hands. Ideal for drummers who dislike the feel of lacquered sticks or who use grip tape.
🖤 Eternal Black
Classic Vater models in a black stain finish. Same hickory, same quality — but with a dark, stylish look. The stain does not affect weight, balance or feel. For drummers who value stage aesthetics.
🌈 Color Wrap
Los Angeles 5A sticks with a colour wrap made from high-density material. Vibrant colours for stage presence with no compromise in feel, weight or balance. The wrap does not slip or peel.
⚡ Extended Play
A series built for extra durability for aggressive playing styles. Reinforced construction for drummers who break sticks too quickly. Same profiles and balance, but with increased impact resistance.
⭐ Signature Series — Artist Sticks
Vater signature models are developed in close collaboration with world-class drummers. Each model reflects the individual style, technique and requirements of a specific artist.
🌶️ Chad Smith (RHCP)
Chad Smith's Funk Blaster — a stick for funk, rock and any groove-driven style. Between 5A and 5B in the grip, extended for extra reach. Barrel tip for a defined cymbal tone. One of the most popular signature sticks in the world.
🎸 Stewart Copeland (The Police)
Stewart Copeland Standard — a legend's stick. Refined profile for sensitive, dynamic playing. Copeland has played Vater for over 30 years — one of the longest partnerships in the industry.
🎹 Mike Mangini (Dream Theater)
Mangini Model — for technically demanding playing at extreme speeds. Balanced stick with a precise tip for articulate cymbal work. Ideal for progressive metal and complex rhythmic patterns.
🥁 Jay Weinberg 908 (Slipknot)
Between 5A and 5B in the grip, +1/4" length for reach. Quick taper for forward throw with fast response. Barrel tip for defined ride tone and full drum tones. For aggressive, powerful playing without sacrificing comfort.
🧹 Vater Brushes
Vater produces a full range of drum brushes — from classic wire models to innovative polymer designs for various musical contexts.
🎵 Wire Brushes
Retractable Wire Brushes: classic retractable wire brushes. Tap (Fixed Handle): fixed-handle version for a more stable feel. Fine wire for a soft, classic swish tone on the snare. Ideal for jazz, ballads and acoustic settings.
🌟 Monster Brushes
Designed in collaboration with Vater artist La Frae Olivia Sci. Adjustable brush with polymer bristles — fan width can be tuned for varying volume and tone. An exceptionally versatile tool.
🎹 Poly Flex / Whip
5A Poly Flex: polymer brushes with a 5A grip — stick-like ergonomics with a brush sound. Whip / Wood Whip: a stick-brush hybrid — wood stick on one end, polymer bristles on the other. Two instruments in one.
🎋 Splashstick — Vater Multi-rods
The Splashstick is Vater's signature multi-rod and one of the brand's most recognised products. A bundle of thin dowels in a rubber grip for soft, controlled sound.
🪵 Splashstick (Birch)
The original Splashstick made from birch dowels. 19 hand-selected dowels in a rubber grip. 4 inches of exposed dowels for a stick-like feel. Warm acoustic tone with a solid crack on rimshots. Ideal for cajón, quiet sets and acoustic performances.
🎋 Bamboo Splashstick
Same design, built from bamboo dowels. Bamboo is the fastest-growing plant on Earth — an eco-friendly choice. Greater durability and slightly more weight than birch. Additional solid feel without excess volume.
🎵 Splashstick Lite / Traditional Jazz
Lite: thinner dowels for even lower volume and a lighter grip. Traditional Jazz: the smallest Splashstick for extremely quiet situations. Ideal for jazz clubs, chamber music and home practice.
🔨 Mallets & Marching Sticks
🎵 Timpani / Keyboard Mallets
Vater produces mallets for timpani, xylophone, vibraphone, marimba and other percussion instruments. Various head hardnesses from soft to hard. Birch or maple handles. For orchestral, educational and ensemble contexts.
🥁 Marching Sticks
Vater marching sticks for marching bands and drum corps. Increased diameter and length for outdoor projection. Rugged construction for endurance during parades and extended rehearsals. Hickory for maximum longevity.
🎒 Vater Accessories
📌 Stick Holders
All-metal stick holders with cymbal-stand clamp. Single-pair and multi-pair models. Fully adjustable angle. Clamp system for a rock-solid connection. Sticks always within reach on stage.
🎯 Grip & Practice Tips
Stick & Finger Tape: tape for extra grip and finger protection. Practice Tips: rubber tips that turn any stick into a practice stick — reduce volume for home sessions.
🔇 Safe & Sound Earplugs
Earplugs for drummers and musicians. Two filter types included for different attenuation levels. Hearing protection without distorting the musical balance.
🔬 Vater Technology
Vater is one of the most technologically advanced stick manufacturers in the world. Every stage of production is controlled for maximum consistency.
💻 Computer Matching
Every pair of Vater sticks undergoes computer analysis for weight and tone. The result: a perfectly balanced pair with identical response in left and right hands. Vater was among the first to introduce this technology — it is now an industry standard.
💧 Moisture Control
Vater uses wood with a moisture content of 10–12% — the optimal range for striking tools. Too little moisture produces a brittle stick. Too much creates a rubbery feel. Vater deliberately maintains a higher moisture content than competitors for maximum durability.
🌳 Wood Selection
Hickory: Shellbark and Shagbark — the two finest hickory species. Sugar Maple: premium Canadian sugar maple. Birch/Bamboo: for Splashstick multi-rods. Every harvested hickory tree is replaced with a new planting — sustainable forestry.
🛡️ Nylon Tip Guarantee
All Vater nylon tips are guaranteed not to fall off, crack or break for the performance life of the stick. If a tip comes off, Vater will replace the pair. One of the strongest guarantees in the industry.
