🏭 About Bach: Vienna 1890 → New York 1918 → Elkhart

Vincent Bach (born Vinzenz Schrottenbach) was born in Vienna in 1890. After graduating from engineering school and serving as a musician in the Austrian Naval Band, he pursued a career as a solo cornetist. When World War I broke out he fled England to the United States with just $5 in his pocket. A letter to conductor Karl Muck earned him an audition, and he soon became principal trumpet of the Metropolitan Opera.

🔧 Birth of the Brand (1918)

While on tour in Pittsburgh in 1918, a repairman damaged Bach's mouthpiece. Finding a suitable replacement proved nearly impossible. Using his engineering background and $300 for a foot-operated lathe, Bach began making mouthpieces. Demand grew rapidly — by 1922 he had 10 employees in a small workshop on East 41st Street in New York City.

🎺 Bach Stradivarius (1924)

The first trumpets appeared in 1924. Musicians immediately called them the "Stradivarius of trumpets" — hence the name. Trombones joined the lineup in 1928 as the factory moved to the Bronx, where over 10,000 instruments were built in 25 years. The 1953 move to Mount Vernon, NY produced the hand-assembled instruments most prized by collectors today.

🏢 Elkhart and Conn-Selmer

H.&A. Selmer acquired the company in 1961; production moved to Elkhart, Indiana in 1965, and to the former Conn factory on Industrial Parkway in 1970 — where Bach is still made today. Bach is now a division of Conn-Selmer (Steinway Musical Instruments). Vincent Bach passed away on January 8, 1976, leaving a legacy that has defined the brass standard for over a century.

🎺 Stradivarius 180 — The World's #1 Professional Trumpet

The Stradivarius 180 series is the world's best-selling professional trumpet. Standard one-piece brass valve casing, Monel metal pistons, one-piece hand-hammered yellow brass bell. The choice of symphonic musicians, jazz artists, soloists and orchestral trumpeters worldwide.

180S37 / 18037

The definitive Stradivarius configuration: ML .459" bore, #37 bell (most versatile), Monel pistons. Available in lacquer or silver plate. The #37 bell offers warm, focused tone with even response across all registers. First choice of symphonic trumpeters. New case design in 2024: smaller, lighter, with integrated backpack straps.

180S43 / 18043

ML .459" bore, #43 bell — brighter and more brilliant than the #37. Popular in jazz, R&B and orchestral parts demanding clear projection. Available in lacquer or silver plate.

180 Bore Options

The Bach 180 is available in three bores: M (Medium .453"), ML (Medium-Large .459") — the most popular, and L (Large .462"). Larger bore → greater volume and less resistance; smaller → better response and clarity. Most orchestral musicians choose ML or L.

180 Bell Materials

Standard: Yellow Brass. Options: Gold Brass (G) — warmer and darker; Bronze (B) — richest resonance; Lightweight (LT) — more projection and response. Additional letters in the model name denote material and leadpipe options (R = reversed leadpipe).

✨ Stradivarius 190 Artisan — The Top of the Line

The Stradivarius 190 series, launched in 2010 as the Artisan Collection, revives construction details from the Mount Vernon and early Elkhart eras. Two-piece valve casing, metal valve guides and a flat bell rim wire in the style of Vincent Bach's 1930s instruments — all delivering a deeper core sound and quicker response. Bach is migrating all its premium new models to this platform.

19037 (50th Anniversary)

Two-piece casing with nickel-silver baluster. Side-seam #37 bell in Mt. Vernon style. #25 leadpipe — the quintessential Bach sound. Cast nickel-silver Z-braces for enhanced resonance. The closest modern equivalent to a vintage Bach for players who want the original character in a new instrument.

190-43 (Centennial)

Released in 2018 to celebrate 100 years of Bach manufacturing. Second generation (2023/2024) features updated cast nickel-silver Z-braces for improved consistency. #43 bell. For players seeking brilliance and character in a premium build.

19072V Vindabona

A unique "Austrian" trumpet with a conical bore through the valve block. Warm, blending tone in the Vienna symphonic tradition. French piston valves. Ideal for Bruckner, Mahler and Strauss without switching to a rotary trumpet.

AP190 (Artisan Piccolo)

Piccolo trumpet on the 190 platform. Four valves, classic Bach sound in the extreme upper register. Revives the aesthetic of Vincent Bach's vintage designs. For baroque concerts, orchestral solos and chamber music.

🎵 Apollo and Special Models

In 2023 Bach revived the Apollo name, which Vincent Bach first used in the 1920s (only about 100 instruments were built then). The modern Apollo bridges the gap between student and full Stradivarius at a more accessible price point.

Bach Apollo (2023)

Two-piece bell: gold brass stem plus yellow brass flare. One-piece valve casing (like the 180). #6R leadpipe — the quickest-responding leadpipe in the Bach lineup. Works as a step-up instrument or as a professional daily driver. A genuine alternative to the Stradivarius at a lower price.

Bach 183 Flugelhorn

The Stradivarius flugelhorn — the professional standard for jazz flugelhorn players for decades. Warm, lyrical, velvety tone widely described as the most beautiful in its class. The go-to instrument for ballads, small ensembles and recording sessions.

Bach Piccolo VBS196

Bb/A piccolo trumpet with four Monel valves and the Bob Reeves patented valve alignment system. Extra G slide. Comes with a leather gig bag and Bach 7E mouthpiece. Bright, scintillating tone in the extreme upper register.

Bach Cornet

The Bach Stradivarius cornet — heir to the cornets that launched the company in the 1920s. Balanced tone between the brilliance of a trumpet and the warmth of a flugelhorn. For brass bands, concert bands, solo recitals and baroque repertoire.

🎼 Bach Stradivarius C Trumpets

Bach C trumpets are the choice of leading American orchestral trumpeters for repertoire traditionally performed on a C instrument (19th–20th century symphonic music).

C190L229 (Michael Sachs)

Developed in 2019 in collaboration with Michael Sachs (principal trumpet, Cleveland Orchestra). 190 platform, L bore, #229 bell. #25M leadpipe — Sachs's personal modification for optimal feel and balance in a symphony orchestra. One of the most prestigious C trumpets in the lineup.

C180 / C190 Stradivarius

Classic Bach C trumpets on the 180 or 190 platform. Available with various bells (#37, #43, #229) and bore sizes. Widely used in orchestras across America and Europe. For musicians who want the warm American sound in the key of C.

📯 Bach Stradivarius Trombones

Bach Stradivarius trombones are the standard for the highest orchestral chairs in the USA and worldwide. "Often copied but never duplicated" — a motto that fully applies. Manufactured in Elkhart, Indiana, by hand.

Model 36 — Medium Tenor

Medium-large .525" bore. 8" yellow brass bell. Open gooseneck. Chrome-plated nickel silver inner slide, nickel silver outer slide. For second trombone in an orchestra, soloists and jazz. Flexible and agile in fast passages.

Large .547" bore. 8.5" yellow brass bell. Nickel silver handgrip, tubular nickel silver body braces. For principal trombone in a major symphony or opera orchestra. Rich, powerful, orchestral tone. Supplied with a genuine Bach mouthpiece and deluxe wood shell case.

Model 42BO / 42K / 42C — With F Rotor

Model 42 with F-attachment — extends the range downward. 42B/BO — traditional wrap (open wrap on BO). 42K — balanced valve design. 42C — removable F section. Each configuration gives a different character of response and tone.

Artisan Trombone

Signature series developed with Peter Steiner. 190-level platform for trombone: returns to the hand assembly and materials of the Mt. Vernon era. Available with various bells (Gold Brass, Silver). For the most demanding soloists and performers.

🎷 Flugelhorn, Cornet, Piccolo Trumpet

183 Flugelhorn Stradivarius

The professional standard for jazz flugelhorn players and classical ensembles. Warm, lyrical, velvety tone — widely described as the warmest in class. Stradivarius-style body, Monel valves. For ballads, small ensembles and studio sessions.

Piccolo Trumpet AP190 / VBS196

AP190 — Artisan Piccolo on the 190 platform: hand assembly, vintage Bach aesthetic. VBS196 — Bb/A piccolo with patented Bob Reeves system, 4 Monel valves, extra G slide. For baroque music, orchestral solos and jazz ensembles.

Cornet Stradivarius

The cornet — the instrument that Vincent Bach himself played as a soloist in the 1920s. Balanced sound between the brightness of a trumpet and the warmth of a flugelhorn. For Brass Band, concert band, baroque repertoire and solo recitals.

Valve Trombone V16

Bach Stradivarius V16 valve trombone: .485" medium bore, 7.5" hand-hammered bell. Monel valves. For jazz ensembles, marching bands, Wagner operas and soloists. The ease and mobility of piston valves with trombone tone.

🎵 Bach Mouthpieces — Where It All Began

Mouthpieces were Bach's original product (1918). It was dissatisfaction with the quality of available mouthpieces that drove Vincent Bach to pick up a lathe and make his own. Today the Bach mouthpiece system is the most comprehensive in the brass industry.

Trumpet Mouthpieces

The Bach system spans sizes 1–20 (with sub-sizes C, B, A, W, etc.). The number indicates cup diameter (smaller number = wider); the suffix indicates cup depth (C = shallow, B = medium, A = deep). Most popular: 3C (orchestral and student standard), 1½C (symphonic), 7C (general purpose), 1C/1B (large, powerful sound).

Trombone Mouthpieces

Series 6.5AL, 5G, 4G, 2G, 1G, 1.5G, and others. Wide range of cup diameters and shapes for tenor and bass trombone. Material: silver-plated over yellow brass. Each Bach mouthpiece is included with the instrument or available separately.

Flugelhorn and Cornet Mouthpieces

Bach flugelhorn mouthpieces: conical receiver, deep cup for warm tone. Cornet mouthpieces: smaller diameter than trumpet. The complete system supports every Bach instrument in the lineup.

Piccolo Trumpet Mouthpieces

Dedicated Bach piccolo series: shallower cup and smaller diameter to support the extreme upper register. Model 7E is the standard included with the VBS196. AP190 ships with its own signature mouthpiece.

⚙️ Bach Technology and Craftsmanship

465 Handcrafted Steps

Every Bach Stradivarius trumpet goes through 465 manufacturing steps, the majority performed by hand by experienced craftspeople in Elkhart, Indiana. This is what makes each instrument unique and explains why Bach is "often copied but never duplicated."

One-Piece Bell

The Stradivarius standard: a bell hammered from a single piece of brass (one-piece hand-hammered bell). The seam runs along the side, not the bottom. Wall thickness: .020" (standard) or .023" (heavy). This construction maximises vibrational integrity and produces the characteristic warm Bach core sound.

Monel Pistons

Bach Stradivarius pistons are made from Monel — a nickel-copper alloy that resists corrosion. It provides smooth, fast valve action and far greater longevity without corrosion compared to nickel-plated nickel silver.

180 vs 190: Valve Casings

Series 180: one-piece brass valve casing. Series 190: two-piece — yellow brass lower two-thirds + nickel silver or bronze baluster on the upper third. More mass near the instrument's centre → richer core sound and quicker response. Metal valve guides — a return to the 1925–1975 standard.

❓ FAQ

What is the difference between Bach 180 and 190?

The 180 series has a one-piece brass valve casing. The 190 Artisan series (from 2010) has a two-piece casing — nickel-silver baluster plus yellow brass — delivering a richer core sound, metal valve guides and a flat bell rim wire returning to Vincent Bach's 1930s construction. Bach is moving all new premium models to the 190 platform.

What does the bell model number mean (37, 43)?

The number indicates the bell taper (shape), not size. Model 37 is the most versatile — warm and focused, the choice of symphonic and jazz players. Model 43 is brighter. Model 72 is the darkest and most powerful.

How many steps does it take to make a Bach Stradivarius?

465 steps — the majority performed by hand by craftspeople in Elkhart, Indiana. This is why each instrument has a unique character and why Bach is "often copied but never duplicated."

What is the Bach Vindabona?

The Vindabona (19072V) features a conical bore through the valve block, giving it a warm, blending symphonic sound in the Austrian tradition (Bruckner, Mahler, Strauss) with French piston valves — not a rotary trumpet, but with the character of one.

Are vintage Mt. Vernon Bach trumpets different from modern ones?

Mt. Vernon trumpets (1953–1965), assembled under Vincent Bach's personal supervision, are the most coveted. Modern Elkhart instruments are built to the same blueprints, and the 190 series revives several construction details from that era.

What is the difference between Bach Model 36 and 42 trombones?

Model 36 — .525" bore, 8" bell, greater flexibility; ideal for second trombone and jazz. Model 42 — .547" bore, 8.5" bell, powerful symphonic sound; the standard for principal trombone in a major orchestra. Model 42 is also available with an F-rotor (42BO, etc.).
