Acoustic instruments on stage and in the studio
The Audix ADX51 is a condenser microphone for acoustic instruments, percussion, cymbals and drum overheads. It also suits ensemble, group vocal and room recording. Its 40 Hz–18 kHz response covers instrument fundamentals and attack detail. The compact body is convenient to position above an instrument or close to a particular sound source.
Cardioid pickup and placement
The cardioid pattern concentrates pickup in front of the capsule and helps reduce spill from other stage sources. Choose distance and angle to suit the instrument: a close position emphasizes the source, while moving back includes more room sound. When using several microphones, listen to their combined signal before settling on the final positions.
Pad and bass roll-off
Recessed switches select a −10 dB pad and bass roll-off starting at 150 Hz. The pad helps accommodate loud instruments, while the filter reduces excessive low frequencies in a voice or instrument. Choose these settings by listening to the signal. A brass body with black finish and steel mesh grille supports regular stage and studio use.
Connection and supplied accessories
Connect the three-pin male XLR output to a microphone preamp providing 9–52 V phantom power; Audix recommends 48 V. The package contains one ADX51, a DCLIP microphone holder, WS81C foam windscreen and P1 carrying pouch. The holder attaches to a microphone stand, and the windscreen helps reduce air movement noise. Prepare a microphone cable, stand and suitable powered input separately.
