Cymbals and overhead pickup
The AKG C430 is designed for instrument pickup on stage, particularly cymbals and hi-hats. Its condenser capsule captures the attack and high-frequency detail of percussion, with a frequency range of 20–20000 Hz. The compact body fits above a drum kit. Use it for a dedicated cymbal channel or as part of an overhead microphone arrangement.
Directional capsule and housing
A cardioid pickup pattern helps focus on the chosen part of the kit. For hi-hat recording, aim towards the cymbal edge while considering the position of the snare drum. The capsule shock mount reduces vibration transmitted through the stand and cable. An all-metal housing protects the components, while an integrated windscreen reduces air noise during performance.
Audio connection and power
The C430 provides a balanced output on a three-pin male XLR connector. It requires 9–52 V phantom power from a suitable microphone input or external supply. Connect an appropriate XLR cable before enabling power, then adjust input gain using the loudest playing expected during the performance.
Accessories and placement
The microphone comes with a W32 windscreen and carrying bag. Select a suitable stand and mounting arrangement for the kit. Adjust height and angle to balance the selected cymbal against surrounding drums. Listen alongside the other microphones and secure the cable while leaving access to stand adjustments.
