Acoustic instrument recording
The AKG P170 is designed for recording and stage pickup of percussion, overheads, acoustic guitar and other string instruments. Its true condenser capsule uses a half-inch diaphragm to capture attack and fine detail. The frequency range is 20–20000 Hz. Adjust placement for each instrument, listening to the balance between bass content and upper-frequency definition.
Cardioid pattern and housing
The cardioid pattern is most sensitive to sound in front of the capsule and reduces pickup from the sides and rear. This helps control the balance between the selected instrument and its surroundings. A metal body and protective grille suit studio and stage work. The compact cylindrical design fits into a suitable stand-mounted setup.
Pad and audio connection
A switch on the body engages 20 dB of preattenuation for close pickup of loud instruments. The microphone has a balanced three-pin male XLR output and requires 48 V phantom power. Connect it to a suitable microphone input, then set gain with the chosen pad position in mind. Check levels during the loudest passages.
Package and setup
The package contains one P170 microphone and a stand adapter. Select a microphone cable and stand for the intended position. Changes in distance and angle help shape the sound before processing. Use a separate pop screen where air blasts may reach the capsule, and keep the microphone dry.
