Flute Microphones — Buy at SoundsGood
Flute microphones address one of the trickiest miking challenges: sound radiates along the entire length, breath creates air noise, and output is quieter than most instruments. Clip-on, SDC, wireless solutions. SoundsGood offers mics for concert flute, piccolo, alto and bass flute.

🎶 Why the Flute Is Hard to Mic
🌬️ Distributed Sound
Unlike trumpet (bell), flute radiates along its length: embouchure (overtones), open keys (fundamental), end (lows). One mic can't capture the full picture.
🔇 Quiet
75–95 dB SPL at 1 m — among the quietest orchestral instruments. Needs high sensitivity (condenser) and a low-noise preamp. Dynamic (SM57) usually isn't enough.
🌬️ Air Noise
The embouchure's airstream creates a "fff" noise on the diaphragm. Fix: angled placement, windscreen, HPF. Never aim directly at the embouchure.
📎 Clip-On
📐 Construction
Miniature condenser on gooseneck + clip on head joint. Aimed at an angle away from airstream. Cable to XLR adapter or bodypack. 48V.
✅ Benefits
Stable position during movement. Minimal spill. No stand. For live, musicals, marching, churches.
🎯 Models
DPA 4099 with flute adapter — reference. ATM350 — popular, affordable. Beta 98 — for wind. e608 — dynamic (no 48V). C519.
🎙️ SDC on Stand
📐 Placement
SDC on boom 30–50 cm from flute, aimed at the middle, slightly above (avoid direct embouchure airstream). Natural, "airy" sound.
📊 Specs
Cardioid. 20–20 kHz. Low noise (<15 dBA premium). HPF 80–120 Hz essential.
🎯 Models
KM 184 (premium). C451 B (bright). NT5 (value). DPA 4011 (reference). Studio: LDC (U87, C414) at 60–100 cm — warmer.
📡 Wireless
📐 System
Clip-on element + bodypack transmitter (belt) + receiver (rack). Mic on head joint, cable to bodypack. 100+ m. 6–12 h.
✅ Benefits
Full freedom of movement. Musicals, marching, shows. Digital (Shure, Sennheiser) — near-wired quality.
🎯 Models
Shure BLX14/B98. Sennheiser EW-D + clip. Shure SLXD + Beta 98. DPA 4099 + wireless adapter.
📐 Placement
📎 Clip-On
On head joint. Capsule 30–45° from airstream (not straight at mouth). Windscreen essential. Aim slightly aside and down toward first key.
🎙️ Stand
SDC on boom: 30–50 cm, middle-of-instrument level, slightly above (angled down). Cardioid. Stereo (studio): two SDC — embouchure + keys.
⚠️ Mistakes
Don't aim at embouchure (noise). Don't go too far (1+ m — too quiet, picks up room). Don't use dynamic (SM57 — not sensitive enough). Condenser is essential.
🌬️ Fighting Breath Noise
🛡️ Placement
Angle 30–45° from airstream. Not at embouchure. Clip-on: aside and down. Stand: middle of flute, slightly above.
🧲 Windscreen
Foam cap on capsule. Thin (don't obstruct). Some clip-ons have built-in.
🎛️ HPF & EQ
HPF 80–120 Hz: cuts breath rumble. EQ: -2 dB at 200–400 Hz (breath "fff"). +2 dB at 8–12 kHz (air, overtones).
🎵 Flute Types
🎶 Concert (C)
Standard. Clip-on or SDC 30–50 cm. C4–C7. Most common — most mic solutions designed for it.
🎵 Piccolo
Smaller, higher (octave up). Brighter, piercing. Louder than C. Smaller clip adapter. SDC with pad (-10 dB). Watch EQ (3–6 kHz).
🎵 Alto / Bass
Larger, lower, quieter. Need even higher sensitivity. Closer (20–40 cm). LDC may be better (more bass). Lower HPF (60 Hz). Larger adapter.
⚖️ Live vs Studio
🎸 Live
Clip-on standard: 4099, ATM350, Beta 98. Stable. Min feedback. HPF essential. Monitor away from mic. Wireless for movement.
🎹 Studio
SDC on stand 30–50 cm: KM 184, C451, NT5. Or LDC 60–100 cm: C414, U87 (warmer). Quiet room. Shock mount. HPF 80 Hz.
🎯 Choice
Concert, musical → clip-on. Studio → SDC/LDC stand. Orchestra → hung SDC. Church → clip-on or SDC.
🎻 Orchestra
📐 Section
SDC hung or tall boom over section. One per 2–4 flautists. Cardioid/omni. KM 184, DPA 4011, Schoeps. Part of overall scheme.
📐 Solo (Spot)
SDC in front (30–50 cm) or clip-on. Blended with main pair. Hypercardioid for isolation (MK 41, KM 185).
📐 Chamber
SDC stereo pair + spot on flute. Balance in mix. Flute + piano, flute + quartet.
🔌 Connection
📎 Clip-On Wired
Mic → cable → XLR adapter (48V) → mixer. DPA 4099: → DAD6001 → XLR. Some: → bodypack preamp → XLR.
📡 Wireless
Clip-on → bodypack TX → wireless → receiver → XLR → mixer. Frequency coordination. Shure BLX/SLXD, Sennheiser EW-D.
🎙️ SDC Stand
XLR → mixer/interface (48V). Quality cable. Shock mount. HPF 80–120 Hz.
