🎶 Why the Flute Is Hard to Mic
🌬️ Distributed Sound
Unlike trumpet (bell), flute radiates along its length: embouchure (overtones), open keys (fundamental), end (lows). One mic can't capture the full picture.
🔇 Quiet
75–95 dB SPL at 1 m — among the quietest orchestral instruments. Needs high sensitivity (condenser) and a low-noise preamp. Dynamic (SM57) usually isn't enough.
🌬️ Air Noise
The embouchure's airstream creates a "fff" noise on the diaphragm. Fix: angled placement, windscreen, HPF. Never aim directly at the embouchure.
