Splash Cymbals for Fast Accents — Size and Alloy
A splash is a small cymbal for fast, bright and short accents. Thanks to its small diameter it responds instantly and decays quickly, adding colourful 'splashes' of sound. Common sizes are 6–12″: smaller ones give the sharpest flash, larger ones approach a mini-crash. They come as mini-splashes and effect ones for stacks. It complements a crash rather than replacing it. At SoundsGood — Zildjian, Sabian, Meinl, Paiste, B20/B8 alloys, an official warranty, delivery across Ukraine. We'll suggest a splash for your style.

Size determines the character and role of the accent. Here's how they compare.

|---|---|---|---|
| Splash | 6–12″ | Higher, short | Fine colour accents |
| Crash | 14–20″ | Powerful, long | Main accents, climaxes |

β Frequently asked questions
What is a splash cymbal?
A small cymbal for fast, bright and short accents. Thanks to its small diameter it responds instantly and decays quickly, adding colourful 'splashes'. Used for fine accents, colour effects and emphasising beats, where a crash would be too long. An additional effect cymbal.
What size should I choose?
Common are 6, 8, 10, 12″. Smaller (6–8″) — the sharpest, highest accent for fine effects. Larger (10–12″) — slightly lower and longer, closer to a mini-crash. Versatile — 10″, 8″ for sharper effects. Many have several splashes of different sizes.
How does it differ from a crash?
A splash is much smaller (6–12″ vs 14–20″), sounds higher, shorter and quieter. A crash gives a powerful long explosion for main accents, a splash a fast sharp 'flash' for fine colour accents. A splash doesn't replace a crash, but complements it.
Where do I mount it in the kit?
Usually above the toms, next to the hi-hat or between the crashes for a convenient quick hit. Mounted on a separate short stand, a bracket or a special holder. Its small weight allows flexible positioning. Check holder compatibility with the diameter and hole.
Which alloy should I choose?
B20 (20% tin) — a richer pro sound. B8 — brighter, simpler and cheaper. Brass — the most affordable. Since a splash is an additional effect cymbal, for the start a more affordable model, and later add a higher-quality one. We'll suggest for the budget.
What styles is it for?
Useful in funk, fusion, pop, progressive, metal and modern styles for fast fine accents. In heavy genres it adds bright accents over a dense sound, in lighter ones — fine ornaments. Not mandatory, but a very expressive cymbal.
Can I make a stack?
Yes. Splashes are often stacked (a splash on top of a crash or china) for a short 'dirty' trashy sound without long decay. A popular effect in modern music, electronics and metal. There are also ready effect cymbals. We'll suggest for stacks.
