A microphone for toms
The Superlux FT4 is a compact dynamic microphone for toms, percussion and wind instruments. It suits live performance, rehearsals and individual instrument recording. Its body and attached holder can be positioned beside a drum while leaving room for the player. This standalone microphone can extend an existing drum microphone collection or cover a particular instrument channel.
Pickup and positioning
The supercardioid pickup pattern helps focus on the intended instrument among neighbouring sources. The specified frequency range is 20–12,500 Hz. On a tom, distance from the head and capsule angle change the balance of attack, resonance and decay. Compare several positions and listen with the other drum channels before choosing the final placement.
Mounting and connection
A swivelling holder forms part of the FT4 assembly. Its screw knob secures the selected angle after the microphone has been aimed. Signal connection uses a three-pin male XLR output. Connect to a suitable microphone input and set gain using the loudest hits or phrases. Route the cable so that it cannot pull the microphone away from its position.
What is included
The package contains one Superlux FT4 with its permanently attached holder and a pouch. Choose a stand and connecting cable separately for the setup. Before a performance, check the holder and clearance for drumsticks. The pouch keeps the microphone organised for storage and transport alongside other equipment.
