Mounted on the instrument
The Superlux PRA383XLR is designed for saxophone and other wind instruments. Its clip attaches to the bell, while the flexible gooseneck aims the capsule towards the desired position. This arrangement helps maintain the distance between microphone and instrument as the musician moves. It suits stage use and recording where a compact instrument-mounted microphone is useful.
Capsule and pickup
The back-electret condenser capsule has a cardioid pattern and a specified response of 40 Hz–18 kHz. Directional pickup helps focus the channel on the instrument. Adjusting the gooseneck changes the balance of attack and tone. Start with some distance from the bell, compare loud and quiet phrases, and choose the final angle while listening within the mix.
Wired operation with PS418S
The microphone lead has a TA3F connector for the included PS418S preamp. This version operates with phantom power through that preamp; use a suitable microphone input supplying 48 V. Mute the channel before connecting, leave enough cable slack for movement and set input gain using the loudest parts of the performance.
Package and setup
The package contains one PRA383XLR with its lead, an instrument bell clip and the PS418S. Check that the clip is secure and that the cable clears keys and hands. Aim with the gooseneck without pulling the lead. Remove the microphone before packing the instrument and avoid sharp bends near the connectors.
