🎷 Baritone Specifics

📐 Biggest Reeds!

Baritone = biggest standard saxophone. Reeds much larger than alto or tenor. NOT compatible! Box says "Baritone Sax." 30–50% more expensive than alto/tenor.

📐 Limited Selection

Not all series available for bari. Available: Vandoren Traditional, Java, V16, V12. D'Addario Rico, Royal, Select Jazz, Reserve, La Voz. Légère Classic, Signature. Not available: some specialty series (ZZ = alto/tenor only).

📐 Thinner Than Alto!

Bari mouthpiece is very open → reeds usually thinner. Alto Traditional 3 → bari Traditional 2.5. Start with 2–2.5! Jazz = even thinner.

⚠️ Bari reeds = their own size! NOT alto, NOT tenor. Check "Baritone Sax" on box. More expensive due to larger size.

💪 Strength for Baritone

🎷 Beginner

Rico 2 or Traditional 2. Start with 2! Bari = easier to blow than alto.

🎷 Big band / jazz

Java 2–2.5 ⭐⭐. V16 2.5. Open mouthpiece = thinner! Meyer/Otto Link + Java 2.

🎷 Classical / orchestra

Traditional 2.5–3 ⭐. V12 2.5–3. S80-type mpc + Traditional 2.5–3.

🎷 Thinner than alto!

Bari mouthpiece more open → thinner reeds. Alto Traditional 3 → bari Traditional 2.5. Don't copy alto strength!

🎷 Pro

Java 2–2.5, V16 2.5, Select Jazz. Mouthpiece Berg Larsen, Otto Link, Vandoren V16.

⚠️ Rule

More open mpc = thinner reed! Bari = most open mpc among saxes → thinnest reeds.

❓ FAQ

Why are bari reeds more expensive?

Bigger size = more cane = higher price. Bari ~30–50% more than alto. Also lower demand. This is normal!

Bari reeds = alto/tenor?

NO! Bari (Eb) = biggest standard reeds. Don't fit alto (smaller Eb!) or tenor (Bb). Check "Baritone Sax."

Java / V16 for big band?

Java = brighter, more powerful, modern. V16 = "darker," vintage, classic big band. Both great! Start with Java 2.

Bari = doubling?

Often! Many altists/tenorists double on bari. Légère synthetic = ideal for doubling! Always ready.

Why thinner than alto?

Bari mouthpiece much more open. More open = thinner reed. Alto 3 → bari 2.5. Don't jump to thick!

Which series NOT available?

Vandoren ZZ = alto/tenor only. JUNO = alto/tenor only. Traditional, Java, V16, V12, Select Jazz = available for bari.
