Oboe reed cane is the foundation of tone production. The oboe uses a double reed: two carefully scraped blades of Arundo donax cane bound together on a metal staple. The quality of the cane directly determines timbre, intonation accuracy, articulation, dynamic range and playing comfort.

📋 Cane Processing Stages
Oboe cane passes through several stages of preparation — from raw tube to finished reed. Earlier stages offer more control but require more equipment and expertise.
🌿 Tube Cane
Unprocessed Arundo donax tube, cut and dried. Requires splitting, pre-gouging, gouging, shaping, folding and tying to the staple. Maximum control; specialised equipment needed.
Diameter: 9.5–10, 10–10.5 or 10.5–11 mm
🔪 Gouged Cane
Split and gouged to the desired thickness. Requires shaping and tying.
Gouge thickness: 0.56–0.62 mm
✂️ Gouged & Shaped
Gouged and trimmed to contour with a shaper. Fold and tie to staple. Most popular option for reed makers.

🧹 Care & Storage
- Soak the reed in clean room-temperature water for 2–3 minutes before playing
- After playing, rinse gently and remove excess moisture
- Dry in an open or vented case — never sealed
- Store in a humidity-controlled reed case with mandrel
- Never leave the reed on the instrument after playing
- Rotate 2–3 reeds through the week for even wear
- Store cane blanks in a dry space at room temperature, away from direct sunlight
- Replace natural reeds every 2–4 weeks depending on playing intensity
