Build and Materials
- G and C strings: Flexible steel rope cores unlock depth, harmonic richness and immediate response. High-density tungsten windings deliver darkness, power and projection without added stiffness — authority with agility.
- A string: Stainless steel wound on a solid steel core. A beautiful warm and focused voice that completes the balanced set.
- D string: Solid steel core with stainless steel winding — seamless transition between the lower and upper registers.
Single Medium tension: Sovereign is offered in one carefully calibrated true medium tension across all four strings — optimal balance between projection, playability and tonal flexibility.
Larsen Performing Artists
"Sovereign creates a natural connection with the instrument, letting its true voice unfold in its full potential. The C String is incredibly responsive, giving the instrument space to breathe, and fully resonate." — Nicolas Altstaedt
"Sovereign is my favourite set of strings. The sound of the string is rich, refined and has a rather dark, noble timbre. It's extremely resonant and the C string had great depth. The string has a light response with the perceived high resistance under the bow, especially a quick response of short, powerful notes on the C string." — Christopher Franzius

FAQ — Frequently Asked Questions
Who is Larsen Sovereign for?
Sovereign is developed for advanced and professional cellists, particularly those performing in solo or highly exposed musical settings — demanding immediate response, strong projection and precise tonal control.
What makes Sovereign different from other Larsen cello strings?
Sovereign is our most soloistic cello set to date, combining a new level of power, clarity and control with an exceptionally immediate response — strong and full-bodied with real punch, while retaining Larsen's signature warmth.
How would you describe the sound of Sovereign?
Focused, powerful and highly defined. Lower strings deliver depth, growl and authority; upper strings provide warmth and clarity. A wide spectrum from dark textured tones to bright singing projection.
Can Sovereign be combined with other Larsen strings?
Yes. The G and C strings pair well with Larsen Original, Larsen Soloist, Il Cannone Warm & Broad and Il Cannone Direct & Focused for A and D. This flexibility allows fine-tuning while maintaining a strong, balanced sound.
What tension is Sovereign available in?
One carefully calibrated true medium tension — optimal balance between projection, playability and tonal flexibility, without the need to choose between tension options.
Does Sovereign require a long break-in period?
No — Sovereign settles quickly. Players notice immediate response and stability, with the sound continuing to open and refine over the first few playing sessions.
How does Sovereign perform in fast passages?
Sovereign is designed for precision. The strings respond instantly to the bow, making them particularly effective in fast passages, short strokes and articulated playing.
How long do Sovereign strings last?
Built for longevity — maintaining tonal integrity, response and tuning stability over an extended playing period. Clean with alcohol periodically to extend string life.
What kind of instruments pair well with Sovereign?
Instruments that benefit from added clarity, definition and projection. Can also enhance already powerful instruments by refining articulation and expanding tonal control.
Is Sovereign suitable for orchestral playing?
While primarily designed for soloistic performance, many players also appreciate its clarity and responsiveness in orchestral and chamber music settings — wherever definition and projection are required.
