Phil Rovner

Phil Rovner grew up in Baltimore and played in local jazz clubs in the early 1950s. He took lessons from the legendary Joe Allard — the renowned professor at the Juilliard School.

Alongside music, Phil worked as an engineer in the aerospace industry, where he tested aircraft characteristics and measured vibrations. He worked with radar technologies and discovered how mathematically similar radar and acoustics are.

"I was having trouble with intonation when I switched from alto to tenor. At work, we were using a material similar to what we now use in our ligatures. I thought — what if I made a ligature from it? It worked. My intonation improved dramatically."
